Huawei reportedly builds DRAM capability to strengthen AI ambitions

Huawei may be preparing for one of its biggest semiconductor moves yet. Fresh reports suggest the Chinese technology giant is working toward manufacturing its own DRAM chips, a step that could significantly strengthen its position in the global chip industry.

According to recent claims from semiconductor analysts and industry reports, Huawei is believed to be involved in building and operating DRAM fabrication facilities through a partnership with Shenzhen based memory company SwaySure. Although Huawei has denied operating such facilities, the allegations continue to attract attention because they fit into the company’s broader strategy of reducing reliance on overseas technology.

If these reports prove accurate, Huawei would move much closer to Samsung’s unique position in the semiconductor market. Samsung is currently one of the few companies capable of designing processors, producing memory chips, and manufacturing storage products under one corporate umbrella. By comparison, companies such as Apple, Intel, and Nvidia depend on external suppliers for at least some critical components, particularly memory.

The reported expansion highlights Huawei’s determination to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem despite years of export restrictions imposed by the United States.

Sanctions continue to shape Huawei’s long term strategy

Huawei’s semiconductor push cannot be separated from the ongoing technology dispute between China and the United States. Since Washington introduced export controls limiting Huawei’s access to advanced chip technology, the company has steadily invested in building domestic alternatives.

Earlier reports linked Huawei to advanced chip production facilities through satellite imagery and industry investigations. Those findings suggested the company had connections to manufacturing operations supported by Chinese state funding. While Huawei has consistently rejected claims that it controls a network of semiconductor factories, the reports have continued to fuel speculation.

Industry observers believe the Chinese government has played a significant role in helping Huawei expand its chip capabilities. Estimates from semiconductor organizations suggest billions of dollars have been invested through government support programs aimed at strengthening China’s domestic semiconductor industry.

China has also encouraged local technology companies to adopt homegrown AI hardware, creating a larger market for Huawei’s Ascend processors while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

Memory production could strengthen Huawei’s AI ecosystem

One of the biggest reasons behind Huawei’s reported interest in DRAM manufacturing is artificial intelligence.

Modern AI processors rely heavily on High Bandwidth Memory, better known as HBM, which provides the speed and bandwidth required for advanced AI training and inference workloads. Current US export controls make it difficult for Huawei to purchase the latest HBM products from leading international suppliers.

Developing domestic memory production could help Huawei secure a reliable supply of these essential components for future generations of its Ascend AI chips.

Even so, matching established industry leaders will not be easy. Samsung remains one of the world’s most advanced memory manufacturers, especially in High Bandwidth Memory, where analysts believe it maintains a lead of several years over many Chinese competitors.

Chinese memory makers have made notable progress in NAND flash technology used in SSDs, narrowing the technology gap in storage. DRAM development has also accelerated, although catching up with global leaders will require continued investment and manufacturing improvements.

Huawei also continues to depend on Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, better known as SMIC, to manufacture many of its advanced processors. While Huawei designs its own chips, production still relies on external fabrication partners, unlike Samsung, which manufactures many of its own semiconductor designs.

A long road before Huawei reaches Samsung’s level

Even if Huawei succeeds in producing its own DRAM, the company still faces significant technical and manufacturing challenges before it can rival Samsung across every major semiconductor category.

Samsung benefits from decades of manufacturing expertise, advanced fabrication technologies, and a well established global supply chain. Huawei, on the other hand, is still building much of its domestic semiconductor infrastructure while navigating international restrictions.

However, Huawei’s continued investment signals that it is pursuing long term independence rather than short term gains. A business capable of designing processors, developing AI accelerators, manufacturing memory, and supplying storage would represent a major milestone for China’s semiconductor ambitions.

For competitors including Apple, Intel, and Nvidia, Huawei’s reported strategy may not create immediate pressure, but it does highlight how quickly China’s semiconductor landscape continues to evolve under the influence of geopolitical tensions and domestic investment.
