Ukraine Begins European Production of BARS Jet Drone With 1,000km Range

Ukraine has started European production of its BARS jet powered strike drone as it looks to increase output and improve its ability to conduct longer range attacks.

The new production effort is being carried out with German support, with Germany financing the initial stage of manufacturing. The first drones produced under the arrangement are expected to be delivered to Ukraine’s Defense Forces from October 10, 2026.

The move comes after an agreement signed on July 8 between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Rather than relying entirely on manufacturing inside Ukraine, the partnership gives the BARS program access to European production capacity while reducing some of the risks associated with Russian attacks on Ukrainian defense facilities.

For Ukraine, that could prove important as it continues to expand its domestic drone industry. Long range unmanned systems have become an increasingly important part of the country’s ability to strike targets far beyond the immediate battlefield.

New BARS configuration reportedly reaches 1,000km

The latest BARS configuration represents a significant step up from earlier versions of the aircraft.

According to the reported specifications, the drone can fly at speeds of more than 700 kilometers per hour and has been developed to carry a considerably larger warhead. Earlier versions reportedly supported payloads of around 22.5 kilograms. The latest configuration can carry up to 60 kilograms.

More importantly, its reported range has reached around 1,000 kilometers following a series of modifications.

The BARS platform is designed with some flexibility in how its available internal space is used. When a mission requires greater range, more room can be allocated to fuel. For shorter missions, that space can instead be used to carry a heavier payload.

That approach gives the same basic aircraft a degree of adaptability depending on the mission. A long range strike can prioritize fuel capacity, while a shorter operation can make greater use of the drone’s payload capacity.

Engine supply remains one of the main factors limiting production. The availability of suitable turbojet engines is currently influencing how quickly additional BARS aircraft can be completed.

More than 40 changes have shaped the platform

BARS is not a static design. Its developers have reportedly made more than 40 changes and upgrades since the original prototype was created.

The platform is divided into three broad configurations known as DeepStrike, MiddleStrike and FrontStrike. Each is intended to address different range requirements and operational roles.

The continuing development reflects the way Ukrainian drone programs have evolved during the war. Designs are being modified based on operational experience, available components and changing battlefield requirements.

The BARS developer has also said that artificial intelligence is now being used in several areas of the program. That includes engineering and development work as well as elements of the drone’s final guidance system.

During the final stage of a mission, the operator can reportedly retain control of the aircraft. Alternatively, control can be transferred to an optical guidance system.

That combination of human control and automated guidance could give the system more flexibility during the final phase of an attack, although the precise capabilities of the guidance system remain difficult to independently verify.

European production could increase pressure on Russian defenses

Moving part of BARS production into Europe gives the program another advantage beyond simply increasing manufacturing capacity.

Ukrainian defense facilities have repeatedly faced Russian missile and drone attacks. Manufacturing outside Ukraine can reduce the exposure of some production activity to those strikes while giving the program access to European industrial and supply networks.

For Germany, supporting BARS production also represents a shift toward deeper involvement in Ukraine’s defense industry. Instead of supplying only finished weapons or equipment, European partners can help Ukraine expand its ability to produce systems itself.

The reported 1,000 kilometer range is particularly significant because it potentially allows BARS to threaten targets much farther from the front line. A fast moving jet powered drone operating at that distance could force Russian air defenses to cover a much larger area.

That does not mean every BARS mission will necessarily use the full reported range or carry the maximum 60 kilogram payload. The aircraft’s design involves a tradeoff between fuel, range and payload. Increasing one capability can affect the others.

Still, the combination of speed, range and payload gives Ukraine another option in its growing long range strike arsenal.

The wider significance may ultimately be the production model itself. If European financing and manufacturing can help Ukraine scale systems such as BARS while keeping development and design work closely connected to Ukrainian battlefield requirements, similar partnerships could become increasingly important.

For Ukraine, the immediate goal is straightforward: produce more capable drones, maintain the pace of development and make those systems harder for Russia to counter.
