  • Sundar Pichai rejects claims that AI will cut half of Alphabet’s 180,000 jobs, focusing on growth through 2026.
  • AI is described as an accelerator, boosting productivity and enabling new product development.
  • Alphabet’s ventures like Waymo, quantum computing, and YouTube’s growth in India drive demand for more employees.
  • Pichai acknowledges job displacement concerns but remains optimistic about AI’s role in innovation.

In a recent Bloomberg interview held in San Francisco on June 4, 2025, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai tackled growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) potentially displacing jobs within the company. With Alphabet employing approximately 180,000 people, Pichai firmly rejected the notion that AI would render half of its workforce obsolete. Instead, he emphasized Alphabet’s ambitious expansion plans, projecting continued growth through at least 2026.

Pichai highlighted AI’s role as a productivity booster rather than a job eliminator. “AI is an accelerator,” he stated, explaining that it streamlines repetitive tasks, allowing engineers to focus on high-impact projects. This efficiency, he argued, fuels innovation and creates demand for additional talent.

“I expect we will grow from our current engineering phase even into next year, because it allows us to do more,” Pichai added, signaling a commitment to scaling Alphabet’s workforce to support new initiatives.

Alphabet’s recent history includes several rounds of layoffs, though 2025 has seen more targeted reductions compared to previous years. Earlier this year, the company parted ways with fewer than 100 employees in its Google Cloud division and later reduced staff in its platforms and devices unit. In contrast, 2023 saw a significant cut of 12,000 jobs, followed by at least 1,000 more in 2024. Despite these reductions, Pichai’s focus remains on growth, with AI acting as a catalyst for new opportunities.

Pichai pointed to Alphabet’s innovative ventures as evidence of its forward momentum. Waymo, the company’s autonomous vehicle division, continues to expand its footprint in the transportation sector. Quantum computing initiatives are pushing the boundaries of technology, while YouTube’s rapid growth underscores Alphabet’s dominance in digital media. In India alone, YouTube boasts 100 million channels, with 15,000 surpassing one million subscribers, showcasing the platform’s global reach and potential for further expansion.

Addressing broader concerns about AI’s impact on jobs, Pichai acknowledged the validity of such fears. He referenced recent comments by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested that AI could disrupt half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. “I respect that,” Pichai said. “I think it’s important to voice those concerns and debate them.” His measured response reflects an awareness of the challenges AI poses while maintaining optimism about its potential to drive progress.

When questioned about the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI)—AI capable of matching human intelligence across all domains—Pichai was cautiously optimistic. “There’s a lot of forward progress ahead with the paths we are on,” he said, citing both current projects and emerging ideas under exploration.

However, he stopped short of guaranteeing AGI’s arrival, noting that technological progress often encounters temporary plateaus. “Are we currently on an absolute path to AGI? I don’t think anyone can say for sure,” he admitted, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding such advancements.

Pichai’s vision for Alphabet centers on leveraging AI to enhance innovation and efficiency while fostering growth. By investing in cutting-edge fields like autonomous vehicles, quantum computing, and digital content, Alphabet aims to remain at the forefront of technological advancement. For now, Pichai’s message is clear: AI is a tool to empower employees, not replace them, and Alphabet’s future is one of expansion and opportunity.
