That unusual release schedule matters if you are thinking about buying an iPhone 17 now.
The iPhone 17 may not get cheaper straight away
Under normal circumstances, the arrival of a new iPhone would put pressure on the price of the previous generation. Apple introduces the new model, lowers the price of the standard older model and removes the previous Pro models from its official lineup.
This year, however, the iPhone 17 could remain in a slightly unusual position.
If Apple introduces the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a possible iPhone 18 Ultra in September, the iPhone 17 would still be the company’s current standard model. There may be no direct replacement for it at the same time.
That means Apple has little reason to immediately cut the iPhone 17’s price.

That does not mean you will be unable to buy them.
Retailers often have their own plans for discontinued phones. Once Apple stops supplying a particular model, stores may reduce prices to clear their remaining stock. This could create some of the best opportunities for buyers who want last year’s Pro hardware without paying the price of the latest generation.
Used and refurbished phones could become even more attractive after the new models arrive.
Waiting could still be the smartest move
If you are planning to buy an iPhone 17, there is a good reason to wait until Apple’s September event before making a decision.
The biggest advantage is not necessarily an official Apple discount. Instead, it is the opportunity to see what happens to the entire iPhone range once the new models are announced.
The iPhone 17 could remain at its current price, receive a later reduction or eventually disappear from Apple’s store. Meanwhile, retailers could start cutting prices on remaining iPhone 17 Pro stock.
That makes the period immediately after the launch particularly interesting for shoppers.
There is one warning, though. If a retailer has a limited supply of a discontinued model, waiting too long can work against you. Once the remaining inventory is gone, the opportunity to buy that particular model at a reduced price may disappear with it.
So if you have no interest in the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models and simply want a good deal on an iPhone 17, the launch period may be worth watching closely.
The safest prediction is that there will not be a major official price cut for the iPhone 17 immediately after the September launch.
