  • Apple is reportedly preparing AirPods with built in cameras that focus on AI features instead of photography.
  • The cameras could help Siri recognise objects, landmarks, menus, and other real world information.
  • References found in iOS 27 suggest the device may be closer to launch than earlier reports indicated.
  • Apple has not confirmed the product, so the September launch should still be treated as speculation

Apple may be preparing one of its most ambitious wearable launches yet. If recent reports are accurate, the company could introduce a new pair of AirPods equipped with built in cameras alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series this September. While the concept may sound unusual at first, these cameras are reportedly designed for artificial intelligence features rather than photography.

The expected product would represent a major step in Apple’s broader AI strategy, allowing Siri and Visual Intelligence to understand the user’s surroundings without relying entirely on an iPhone. Although Apple has not officially confirmed the device, multiple reports and software references suggest development is progressing quickly.

If the launch does happen this year, it could become one of the most talked about announcements during Apple’s September event.

Cameras are expected to power AI instead of photography

The idea of cameras inside wireless earbuds naturally raises privacy concerns, but reports suggest Apple has a very different purpose in mind. These cameras are not expected to capture photos or record videos like a smartphone camera. Instead, they are said to function as sensors that feed visual information to Apple’s AI system.

The cameras would essentially become Siri’s eyes, helping Apple’s assistant understand what the user is looking at. Imagine standing in front of a restaurant menu, a historical monument, or an unfamiliar plant. Instead of taking out your phone and opening an app, users could simply ask Siri questions about what is in front of them.

The AirPods would reportedly work closely with Apple’s Visual Intelligence features, making everyday interactions more natural. This approach could reduce the need to constantly reach for an iPhone while still giving users access to contextual information.

Apple appears to be focusing on convenience rather than turning AirPods into miniature action cameras. That distinction could make the product more acceptable to users concerned about privacy.

Software clues suggest development is at an advanced stage

The latest report comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who claims Apple has been developing camera equipped AirPods under multiple internal projects.

According to the report, one version known internally as B798 was previously expected to arrive in 2027. However, another project carrying the codename B790 now appears to be much closer to release.

The biggest clue comes from references reportedly discovered inside iOS 27. Gurman says these software references indicate Apple is actively preparing the product for launch. Apple often develops several prototypes before deciding which version reaches consumers, making it possible that the B790 model has become the company’s preferred design.

The speculation gained further momentum after developer Sam Henri reportedly discovered similar references in the iOS 27 beta last month. While software references do not guarantee an upcoming launch, they often provide early hints about products Apple is testing internally.

Taken together, these findings suggest the company may be further along in development than previously believed.

What new features could these AirPods offer?

Beyond recognising objects, Apple is reportedly exploring several AI driven experiences for the new AirPods.

One possibility is smarter navigation. Instead of relying only on map directions, Siri could recognise buildings, landmarks, or other visual cues to provide more natural guidance while walking.

The cameras may also support intelligent reminders. For example, if the system notices a specific object in your surroundings, Siri could remind you about a related task or provide useful information based on what it detects.

Reports also suggest the earbuds could feature slightly longer stems to make room for the camera hardware. A small LED indicator may also be included to let users know whenever visual information is being processed or sent to Apple’s cloud services. Such an indicator could help address privacy concerns by making AI activity visible to users.

These features remain speculative, but they align with Apple’s recent push to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply across its ecosystem.

Apple remains silent for now

Despite growing speculation, Apple has not officially acknowledged the existence of camera equipped AirPods. The company rarely comments on unreleased products, so confirmation is unlikely before its launch event.

As with every early leak, there is always a chance that internal prototypes never reach consumers or launch on a different timeline. Apple is known for testing multiple hardware concepts before selecting the final version.

Still, reports from established industry sources combined with software discoveries have made this rumour harder to ignore. If Apple does unveil these AI focused AirPods alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, they could mark a significant shift in how wearable devices interact with the world around users.

Rather than replacing smartphones, the new AirPods could become an extension of Apple’s growing AI ecosystem, delivering contextual assistance through natural voice interactions while keeping the user’s hands free.
