  1. The Odyssey is projected to earn $84.5 million in its second weekend, marking Christopher Nolan’s biggest second weekend ever.
  2. Premium formats including IMAX and 70MM account for 58 percent of weekend revenue, higher than opening weekend.
  3. Strong audience reception and positive word of mouth continue to support the film’s box office momentum.
  4. New releases including Crosswalk, Hadestown, Motor City, and Her Private Hell could not challenge Universal’s dominant blockbuster.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is showing remarkable staying power at the North American box office, with Universal’s epic adaptation expected to earn $84.5 million in its second weekend. If the estimate holds, the film will deliver the strongest second weekend of Nolan’s career, comfortably surpassing the $75.1 million second weekend recorded by The Dark Knight in 2008.

The latest projections come after the movie collected nearly $25.9 million on Friday, representing a healthy 49 percent decline from its opening Friday. That kind of drop is widely viewed as a strong sign for a major blockbuster, especially one that opened at such a massive scale.

Even more impressive is the film’s reliance on premium theatrical experiences. IMAX, Premium Large Format screens, Dolby Cinema, and traditional 70MM presentations are contributing 58 percent of the film’s second weekend revenue. That figure is even higher than the 53 percent share recorded during its opening weekend, highlighting continued audience interest in experiencing the film in its intended format.

IMAX and 70MM Continue to Drive Record Breaking Numbers

Premium formats remain one of the biggest reasons behind the film’s sustained success. IMAX alone accounts for 29 percent of the second weekend total, including both digital IMAX and IMAX 70MM screenings. Premium Large Format screens contribute another 22 percent, with Dolby Cinema making up a notable portion of those earnings.

Among the standout locations, the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles has emerged as the highest grossing venue. The historic theater has already generated approximately $2.48 million in ticket sales and advance bookings through the film’s fifth week, officially overtaking the lifetime theatrical performance of Oppenheimer at the same location.

Other top performing IMAX 70MM venues include Regal LA Live, Regal Irvine Spectrum, Regal Opry Mills in Nashville, and Regal UA Colorado Center in Denver. Meanwhile, Glendale’s Alex Theatre leads among traditional 70MM venues, while New York City’s Nitehawk Cinema has become the strongest performing 35MM location.

These figures reinforce an ongoing trend in theatrical exhibition. Premium screens continue to generate a disproportionately large share of revenue, suggesting that exhibitors and studios may not always need the largest possible theater footprint when demand is concentrated in high value formats.

Audience Response Remains Strong Across Demographics

The audience profile for The Odyssey has remained remarkably consistent during its second weekend. According to early audience tracking, men still represent a slight majority at 52 percent, though that figure has softened from 59 percent during opening weekend. The broader audience mix also indicates growing interest among female moviegoers.

Adults over the age of 25 continue to dominate attendance, making up 76 percent of ticket buyers. At the same time, approximately half of all viewers fall within the 18 to 34 age group, demonstrating broad appeal across younger and older audiences alike.

Audience satisfaction also remains exceptionally high. Recommendation scores continue to sit above 80 percent for both men and women, suggesting positive word of mouth is helping sustain ticket sales beyond opening weekend.

Geographically, the strongest attendance is coming from the eastern United States, western markets, and Canada, where premium presentations continue to sell particularly well.

New Releases Find Limited Room Against Universal’s Blockbuster

While The Odyssey comfortably holds the top position, several newcomers entered the marketplace this weekend.

Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk alongside the limited engagement theatrical release of Hadestown posted the strongest debut among new releases. The film earned around $4 million on Friday, including preview screenings, and is expected to finish with an opening weekend between $8 million and $9 million across nearly 2,000 locations.

The release performed particularly well in eastern, southern, midwestern, and mountain markets, despite not benefiting from premium large format screens.

IFC’s noir thriller Motor City is tracking toward a modest $1.8 million opening after earning approximately $850,000 on Friday, including previews.

Meanwhile, Neon’s Her Private Hell, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, collected around $270,000 on Friday and is expected to finish the weekend with roughly $625,000. Although the numbers are relatively modest, the performance places the film on track to surpass the domestic earnings of Refn’s Only God Forgives and opens ahead of the director’s The Neon Demon.

Outside the top ten, the Tamil action drama Jana Nayagan opened in 415 theaters and is projected to earn approximately $865,000 during its first weekend. The film has shown particularly strong performances in markets including Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, Dallas, New York City, and Austin.

Overall, the North American box office is expected to generate roughly $140.6 million this weekend, down about 25 percent compared to the same weekend last year, when Fantastic Four: First Steps debuted.

With premium format demand showing no signs of slowing and audience reception remaining highly positive, The Odyssey appears well positioned for another strong stretch at the box office. If the projected numbers hold through Sunday, Christopher Nolan will add yet another milestone to an already remarkable theatrical career, setting a new personal record for second weekend performance while reinforcing the enduring power of premium cinema experiences.
