After 12 episodes of kidnapping, grief, medical conspiracies and a marriage pushed to breaking point, The Husband finally reveals the truth behind Tae ju and Se yun’s troubled relationship.
The finale brings the central mystery to a close and confirms who was really working against Tae ju. It also gives the drama’s fractured couple an ending that is more complicated than a straightforward reconciliation.
Kang Tae ju, played by Namkoong Min, spends much of the series trying to uncover what happened to his wife while also dealing with suspicion surrounding her disappearance. Go Se yun, played by Lee Seol, is caught in the middle of a conspiracy that reaches deep into the hospital and its medical projects.
By the final episode, the people responsible begin to face the consequences. Tae ju manages to save Kim Kyung ae, Noh Man hee turns himself in and Choi Chi woong is arrested.
But the biggest question is what happens to Tae ju and Se yun after everything they have been through.
Who is behind the conspiracy in The Husband?
The finale reveals that Choi Chi woong is the central figure behind the conspiracy that has been closing in on Tae ju.
Chi woong’s motives are rooted in resentment. Tae ju has repeatedly been trusted with major surgeries and important medical work, including projects connected to the stem cell research that Chi woong helped initiate.
The death of Hayun leaves the project in a difficult position, and Tae ju’s return becomes increasingly important to its future. For Chi woong, that only makes Tae ju’s success harder to accept.
His resentment eventually turns into a plan to bring Tae ju down.
Chi woong manipulates Noh Man hee by exploiting his desperation to get treatment for Kim Kyung ae. Man hee is led to believe that removing Tae ju is the only way Kyung ae can receive the surgery she needs.
The conspiracy also reaches the circumstances surrounding Dr Ha’s death, while Cha Myeong hee becomes another figure connected to the larger scheme.
Once the truth comes out, the apparent conflict between Tae ju and the people around him becomes much clearer. What looked like a series of isolated events was part of a much bigger attempt to control the situation around Tae ju and eliminate him as an obstacle.
What happens to Se yun?
Se yun survives the attack and eventually discovers the truth about what Tae ju said to Man hee.
One of the biggest misunderstandings in the story comes from a recording that appears to suggest Tae ju wanted someone to get rid of his wife. On its own, the recording makes Tae ju sound as though he was involved in a plan against Se yun.
The complete conversation tells a very different story.
Tae ju was talking about wanting Se yun removed from the dangerous situation surrounding him. His decision comes from a mixture of grief, guilt and an instinct to protect her, rather than a genuine desire to see her harmed.
That distinction matters to Se yun because it changes how she understands Tae ju’s actions.
However, learning the truth does not magically fix their marriage.
Throughout the drama, Tae ju has convinced himself that protecting Se yun means making painful decisions on his own. He keeps information from her because he believes he can carry the burden himself and spare her from more suffering.
Se yun sees things differently.
For her, a marriage requires both people to face difficult situations together. Tae ju repeatedly makes choices on her behalf, even when those choices directly affect her life. By the time the truth is revealed, the damage caused by years of grief, secrecy and poor communication is too deep to simply disappear.
Why do Tae ju and Se yun divorce?
Tae ju and Se yun ultimately decide to divorce, even though they still care deeply about one another.
This is one of the more bittersweet aspects of the finale. The drama does not frame their divorce as proof that their love was meaningless. Instead, it presents their separation as the result of two people recognising that love alone is not enough to repair everything that has happened between them.
Tae ju and Se yun have spent years dealing with loss and misunderstanding. Their different approaches to protecting each other only make the distance between them wider.
Tae ju believes that taking responsibility means making difficult choices alone. Se yun wants honesty, trust and the chance to make those choices together.
Neither approach comes without good intentions, but their inability to meet in the middle eventually takes its toll.
Se yun therefore chooses to end the marriage rather than continue repeating the same pattern. Tae ju accepts her decision instead of trying to force another outcome.
The result is a surprisingly mature ending for a thriller built around extreme circumstances. Their relationship does not end because their feelings suddenly disappear. It ends because they realise they need space to recover from everything they have experienced.
Do Tae ju and Se yun get back together?
Not officially.
The final scene leaves their future deliberately open. On Hayun’s birthday, Tae ju and Se yun meet again at a place associated with their late daughter.
Their conversation is brief, but the atmosphere is noticeably different from the tension that defined much of the series. They are no longer trying to solve a mystery, protect each other through secrecy or repair a marriage that has already become too painful.
Instead, they simply meet as two people who have survived something devastating.
The pair eventually walk together, suggesting that their bond remains even after the divorce.
The drama does not confirm that they remarry, nor does it explicitly suggest that they are starting a new romantic relationship. Their final meeting is better understood as a sign that they have reached a more peaceful understanding of each other.
That gives The Husband an ending that is hopeful without being overly neat.
Tae ju and Se yun may no longer be husband and wife, but they are not strangers either. They can still care about each other while choosing separate paths.
