Sling TV fans, brace yourselves: the popular streaming platform is implementing a 15% price hike across its plans starting December 20, 2024.
The move marks the first increase since 2022, with all Sling Orange, Blue, and combined plans seeing a $5.99 monthly jump.
Sling Orange Plan Sees a 15% Increase
The entry-level Sling Orange plan, previously $40, will now cost $45.99 per month. Sling Blue, which offers a different selection of channels, also jumps from $45 to $50.99 per month.
The most comprehensive plan, combining Sling Orange and Blue, rises from $60 to $65.99 per month.
This increase will take effect on the first billing cycle after December 20, 2024, impacting all subscribers.
Why Are Sling Prices Increasing?
Sling attributes these price changes to rising costs imposed by programming providers. In a statement, the company explained, “The price we pay to provide you with the programming you enjoy continues to increase well above the pace of inflation.”
Sling emphasized its ongoing efforts to keep prices as low as possible but admitted it could no longer absorb these escalating costs.
How Does Sling Compare to YouTube TV and Other Rivals?
Despite the price hikes, Sling TV remains a more affordable option compared to many competitors. For example, YouTube TV’s base plan costs $72.99 per month, significantly higher than Sling’s most expensive offering at $65.99.
However, it’s worth noting that the channel lineups vary between these services, and some customers might find YouTube TV’s broader selection worth the extra cost.
Sling still markets itself as offering “some of the lowest prices in paid live TV.” Its smaller channel bundles allow for tailored packages, potentially saving subscribers money compared to other full-scale streaming platforms.
Special Offers to Ease the Transition
To soften the impact of these price increases, Sling is offering discounts for new and current subscribers:
- Half-price subscriptions for the first month for new signups.
- $5 off monthly add-ons, such as AMC+ or Paramount Plus with Showtime.
- A free month of the Premium Pass (normally $32.99), giving users access to additional channels.
These promotions provide an opportunity for hesitant customers to explore Sling’s services without bearing the full cost immediately.
A Broader Streaming Industry Trend
Sling’s price hike aligns with a larger trend across the streaming industry. Platforms like Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix have also raised prices this year, citing rising production and licensing costs.
As content creators demand higher fees and inflation impacts operational expenses, streaming services face challenges balancing affordability with profitability.
While price-conscious viewers may look for alternatives or cancel subscriptions, Sling remains one of the more cost-effective options for live TV streaming.
