Apple Intelligence, the tech giant’s latest foray into artificial intelligence, has made its debut across iPhones, iPads, and Macs, transforming how users interact with their devices.

Launched in October 2024, this AI platform integrates seamlessly into apps like Messages, Mail, and Notes, offering enhanced features powered by advanced large language models (LLMs). As Apple competes with industry leaders like Google and OpenAI, Apple Intelligence aims to deliver a user-friendly, privacy-focused AI experience.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple describes its AI platform as “AI for the rest of us,” emphasizing practical enhancements to everyday tasks. Built on deep learning, Apple Intelligence excels in text and image generation.

Its Writing Tools feature, available in apps like Mail and Messages, allows users to summarize lengthy texts, proofread content, or generate messages based on specific tones or prompts. For example, you can ask the system to draft a professional email or a casual text with ease.

Image generation is another highlight, with tools like Genmoji, which creates custom emojis in Apple’s signature style, and Image Playground, a standalone app for generating shareable visuals. These features integrate into apps like Messages and Keynote, making content creation more intuitive.

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, also received a significant upgrade. Now more deeply embedded in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Siri responds to complex queries across apps. For instance, you can ask Siri to edit a photo and insert it into a message without switching apps. Its new glowing light design replaces the traditional icon, signaling its active state.

New Features Announced at WWDC 2025

At WWDC 2025, Apple introduced Visual Intelligence and Live Translation. Visual Intelligence enables image-based searches, allowing users to identify objects or landmarks while browsing.

Live Translation, set to roll out with iOS 26 in 2025, will provide real-time conversation translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps. However, a more advanced, personalized Siri, capable of understanding personal contexts like relationships, was delayed due to quality concerns, with Apple promising updates in the coming year.

When and Where Did It Launch?

Apple Intelligence debuted at WWDC 2024, dispelling rumors that Apple was lagging in the AI race. The platform rolled out with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 in October 2024, initially supporting U.S. English.

Additional English localizations (Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African, and U.K.) followed, with support for languages like Chinese, French, and Japanese slated for 2025.

The iPhone 16 event in September 2024 showcased further AI enhancements, including translation features for Apple Watch Series 10 and visual search capabilities for iPhones. The second wave of features, including Genmoji and ChatGPT integration, arrived with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2.

Which Devices Support Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is available on select devices with powerful chipsets, including all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max (A17 Pro). Compatible iPads include the iPad Pro (M1 and later), iPad Air (M1 and later), and iPad mini (A17 or later).

Macs with M1 or later chips, such as MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro (M2 Ultra), also support the platform. Notably, standard iPhone 15 models lack the necessary hardware.

How Does It Work Offline?

Unlike competitors like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, which rely heavily on cloud servers, Apple Intelligence prioritizes on-device processing for many tasks. By training smaller, task-specific models, Apple reduces resource demands, enabling features like email composition to work offline.

For complex queries, Apple uses its Private Cloud Compute, powered by Apple Silicon servers, ensuring privacy without compromising performance. Users won’t notice whether tasks are processed locally or in the cloud unless offline, when remote queries fail.

Third-Party Integration and Developer Access

Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, available with iOS 18.2. This enhances Siri’s knowledge base and adds a “Compose” feature to Writing Tools for prompt-based content creation. Users with paid ChatGPT accounts can access premium features, but the integration is free for all. Apple has hinted at future partnerships, with Google Gemini likely next.

At WWDC 2025, Apple introduced the Foundation Models framework, enabling developers to build AI features into third-party apps using offline models. This allows apps like Kahoot to create personalized quizzes from user notes, enhancing privacy and reducing costs.

Why Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence represents a pragmatic, privacy-first approach to AI, seamlessly enhancing existing apps and workflows. By focusing on on-device processing and selective cloud use, Apple sets itself apart in a crowded AI market. As the platform evolves, with new features and broader language support in 2025, it’s clear Apple is committed to making AI accessible and practical for its users.
