The Pixel 11 Pro has one camera feature that genuinely makes me want to change the way I take photos. Magic Capture is clever, practical and surprisingly easy to use. Yet, despite how impressive it is, I would still spend my money on the Pixel 10 Pro this sales season.
That might sound strange when the newer phone has a fresh processor, improved software and a headline camera feature that the previous generation does not currently offer. But buying a new phone is rarely about having the newest feature. It is about getting the best combination of price, performance and features for your money.
And right now, the Pixel 10 Pro looks like the smarter choice.
Magic Capture is genuinely useful
The Pixel 11 Pro’s Magic Capture feature is easily one of its most interesting additions.
The idea is simple. Instead of deciding whether to record a video or take still photos, you can effectively do both at once. Start Magic Capture, point the phone at your subject and record as you normally would. When you finish, the phone gives you the video along with a selection of high quality still images taken from important moments during the recording.
That could be particularly useful when photographing children, pets, sports or anything else that does not stay still for very long.
Normally, taking a photo during a fast moving moment means risking a missed shot. Recording video solves that problem, but video frames are not always the same as deliberately captured photographs. Magic Capture removes much of that compromise.
It is the sort of feature that sounds like a gimmick until you actually use it. Once you see the convenience, it becomes easy to imagine using it regularly.
There is just one problem. I would not buy the Pixel 11 Pro solely to get it.
The Pixel 10 Pro makes more financial sense
The biggest argument in favor of the Pixel 10 Pro is the price.
The Pixel 11 Pro starts at $1,099 in the US, £1,079 in the UK and AU$1,849 in Australia. The Pixel 10 Pro is already cheaper, and it is much more likely to receive aggressive discounts as retailers make room for newer hardware.
That matters even more during major sales events.
The previous generation of a flagship phone can become an excellent deal once retailers start cutting prices. The difference between two generations can look relatively small on paper, but a substantial discount can completely change the value equation.
If the Pixel 10 Pro drops significantly below its original price, I would have a hard time recommending that most buyers spend considerably more on the Pixel 11 Pro.
There is also another reason not to worry too much about Magic Capture being exclusive to the new phone.
Google has a history of bringing useful software features to older Pixel devices. That does not guarantee Magic Capture will arrive on the Pixel 10 Pro, but it makes the possibility worth considering. If Google eventually expands the feature to last year’s flagship, one of the biggest reasons to choose the Pixel 11 Pro disappears.
The hardware gap is smaller than you might expect
The Pixel 11 Pro is newer, but that does not automatically make it dramatically better.
Its processor is more powerful, which should provide additional performance and potentially improve efficiency. For demanding users, that extra power could be worthwhile. For everyday tasks such as messaging, browsing, photography, streaming and social media, however, the Pixel 10 Pro already offers plenty of performance.
The memory situation is also interesting. The Pixel 10 Pro comes with 16GB of RAM across its configurations, while the Pixel 11 Pro starts with 12GB.
That does not mean the Pixel 11 Pro will necessarily feel slower. Software optimisation and the processor both play important roles in real world performance. Still, it is difficult to describe the newer phone as an obvious hardware upgrade when the older model has more memory in its starting configuration.
The camera hardware is also broadly similar, while the battery and display experience have not been transformed between generations. The Pixel 11 Pro does offer a brighter display at its peak, but that alone is unlikely to justify a major price difference for most buyers.
I would wait for the Pixel 10 Pro deal
The Pixel 11 Pro is the better phone in some respects. Magic Capture is genuinely appealing, and anyone who loves mobile photography may find the feature particularly compelling.
But the Pixel 10 Pro looks like the better purchase.
That is especially true if sales push its price substantially lower. You still get a powerful Pixel phone, plenty of RAM, capable cameras, a high quality display and Google’s software experience. You also avoid paying a premium simply because the phone belongs to the newest generation.
For buyers who always want the latest hardware, the Pixel 11 Pro will naturally be the more attractive option. If you want the best overall value, however, I would keep an eye on Pixel 10 Pro discounts before making a decision.
The most sensible strategy is to compare the actual sale prices rather than the launch prices. If the gap between the two phones becomes large, the Pixel 10 Pro becomes very difficult to ignore.
Magic Capture may be the Pixel 11 Pro feature that gets all the attention, but it is not enough to change my buying recommendation.
For this sales season, I would take the cheaper Pixel 10 Pro and put the money saved toward something else.
