LG could be inching closer to reviving its long-rumored rollable phone, with the latest patent indicating the company’s continued interest in futuristic phone design.

The recently published patent application reveals new developments in LG Display’s rolling OLED technology, sparking fresh hope for tech enthusiasts who remember the ill-fated LG Rollable phone prototype from 2022.

Rollable Display Technology

The patent in question was officially filed on October 10, 2023, and later published on October 8, 2024. It details advanced rolling OLED display technology that can be applied to devices as small as smartphones and potentially larger devices.

This same technology powered the LG Rollable prototype that was initially showcased a few years ago.

For those unfamiliar, LG’s rollable concept phone featured a 6.8-inch display that could extend up to a 7.4-inch mini-tablet. It never made it to the market, as LG pulled out of the smartphone industry in 2021, but it certainly left an impression on fans.

A hands-on review of the prototype, conducted by BullsLab, gave us a glimpse into the device’s potential, raising curiosity about its future.

LG Display, the subsidiary responsible for this patent, specializes in designing and manufacturing displays and licensing them to other companies.

While LG Electronics, a separate entity, ceased phone production, LG Display continues to innovate in display technology.

Could LG Return to Smartphones?

The patent filing doesn’t necessarily confirm LG’s return to smartphone manufacturing, but it raises an intriguing possibility. LG made a name for itself with bold, innovative smartphone designs, and this rollable phone would certainly align with its history of pushing boundaries.

Consider the LG Wing, for example, which boasted a distinctive T-shaped dual-screen design in 2020, or the LG V60, which competed in the folding phone market with a detachable second screen.

Despite leaving the smartphone business, the continued development of cutting-edge technology by LG Display is worth noting. This latest patent suggests that LG hasn’t completely abandoned the idea of redefining mobile displays.

However, it is still unclear if LG itself will produce a new rollable phone or if this tech will be licensed to other manufacturers.

In fact, the patent’s primary focus on display technology may mean that the actual production of phones could land in the hands of another company that licenses LG Display’s OLED tech.

What’s Next for Rollable Displays?

Filing patents isn’t uncommon in the tech world, and many companies do it simply to protect their innovations. Yet, LG’s persistence with its rollable display patents keeps the dream of a rollable phone alive.

The concept of rolling screens could revolutionize not just smartphones but also larger devices, and LG Display’s advancements show they are still committed to this vision.

While there hasn’t been any official word from LG regarding a new smartphone, the continued research and development of rolling OLED screens signal that this tech is far from forgotten.

If licensed to a third party, we could eventually see a rollable phone hit the market—whether under LG’s name or someone else’s.

The next generation of smartphones may not just fold but roll, offering new possibilities for how we use our devices.
