- Netflix is developing an Outer Banks prequel with the working title Kildare.
- The story will reportedly take place 20 years before the original series and explore Kildare’s social divide.
- Original creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke are working on the project.
- Fans are interested in seeing the history of families such as the Camerons and the origins of Kiara’s complicated family relationships.
Outer Banks prequel news has arrived just as the original series has wrapped another major chapter. Netflix is developing a new series currently known by the working title Kildare, taking viewers back roughly 20 years before the events of Outer Banks.
The idea may sound familiar to anyone who has watched a certain sprawling television franchise expand through multiple generations. In fact, fans are already comparing the move to the way Yellowstone grew into a larger universe with stories set before and alongside the main show.
Whether Kildare becomes a hit is impossible to know at this stage, but there is one reason the timing could work in its favor. The ending of Outer Banks season 5 left viewers with plenty to discuss, and some fans who were unsure about another chapter are now more interested in seeing the world explored from a different perspective.
Netflix has not revealed a cast, release date or detailed plot for the prequel yet. What we do know is that original creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke are involved, with the project currently being developed behind the scenes.
Pate told Deadline that the team is working on the script and trying to make the project as strong as possible with Netflix.
That means we are still very much in the early stages. There is no trailer to dissect, no casting announcement to debate and no confirmed production schedule. Still, the basic premise gives the series plenty of room to explore the history that the original show could only hint at.
A chance to explore Kildare before the Pogues
The biggest difference between Kildare and Outer Banks is that the new series will not simply continue the adventures of John B, Sarah and the rest of the Pogues.
Instead, it is expected to look at the origins of the social divide that has shaped Kildare for years. The original series established a sharp contrast between the wealthy Kooks and the working class Pogues, but much of that history remained in the background.
A prequel gives the creators an opportunity to show how those divisions developed.
That could make the series more than just another attempt to squeeze additional mileage out of a popular Netflix franchise. If the story focuses on the people and relationships that helped create Kildare as we know it, there is a chance for the prequel to feel like a genuine expansion of the world.
And there is already plenty of material for the writers to play with.
Several characters from the original series come from families whose histories are closely tied to the Kook and Pogue divide. Exploring their parents and grandparents could reveal why certain relationships became so complicated and why old grudges continued for so long.
Fans already have plenty of ideas
The reaction among fans appears mixed, but there is a noticeable sense of curiosity around the idea.
Some viewers were initially hesitant about a prequel. That is understandable after five seasons of Outer Banks, particularly when the main story has already gone through treasure hunts, betrayals, family revelations and major changes for its central characters.
However, fans discussing the announcement have pointed out that a prequel could answer questions the original series did not fully resolve.
One obvious possibility is Kiara’s family.
Kiara, played by Madison Bailey, has always been caught between different worlds. Her parents have a very different outlook from her friends, and the reasons behind that tension have not always received the attention some viewers expected.
A story set decades earlier could finally explore how Kiara’s father moved from being associated with the Pogue world to becoming so opposed to it. That history could also help explain the complicated relationship between parents and children throughout Kildare.
There are other possibilities too. Fans have suggested that the prequel could revisit the younger versions of characters connected to the Cameron family, Topper’s family and Big John.
That does not mean those characters will definitely appear. Netflix has not confirmed any returning characters or actors. For now, these ideas remain fan speculation.
Still, they highlight why the concept has potential.
Season 5 may have created the perfect opening
The timing of the announcement is particularly interesting because Outer Banks season 5 ended with the Pogues securing the Royal Merchant gold and buying back their land. John B and Sarah also took a major step forward by getting married.
For viewers who wanted the original story to end on a more satisfying note, the conclusion provides a natural stopping point.
That could actually benefit Kildare.
Instead of immediately asking audiences to follow another adventure with the same characters, Netflix can move sideways through the timeline and show why the world they inherited looks the way it does.
It also allows the creators to build tension without having to undo the ending of the original series.
Of course, a prequel carries its own risks. Fans already know where many family relationships eventually lead. The writers therefore need to create compelling stories even when the audience has an idea of the future.
That challenge could be what makes Kildare interesting.
The strongest version of the show would not simply rely on familiar names or references to the original series. It would use the history of Kildare to tell a fresh story about class, family, ambition and the decisions that shape future generations.
For now, Netflix is keeping the details close to the chest. With the script still being developed, it could be some time before we learn when filming begins or when the series might arrive.
But after five seasons of Outer Banks, the franchise clearly is not ready to leave Kildare behind.
