Godzilla Minus Zero takes the story beyond the destruction and emotional turmoil of its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One. The sequel reunites audiences with familiar characters while introducing a terrifying new monster, unexpected betrayals and a conclusion that leaves plenty of room for another instalment.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film continues the story of postwar Japan, exploring the consequences of nuclear destruction, personal trauma and the difficult process of rebuilding a life after tragedy.

However, the sequel does more than bring another giant monster to Japanese shores. Its ending raises important questions about the future of the Shikishima family, the fate of a scientist caught between competing powers and the possibility of further adventures in Toho’s expanding cinematic universe.

Warning: Major spoilers for Godzilla Minus Zero follow.

Godzilla Minus One recap: Where the story began

Before getting into the sequel’s ending, it is worth revisiting the events that shaped its central characters.

Godzilla Minus One takes place in Japan shortly after World War II. The country is struggling to recover from the devastation of the conflict, while its people face enormous emotional and physical challenges.

The story follows KĹŤichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who abandoned his mission rather than sacrifice his life. Haunted by guilt, he struggles to find a reason to continue living.

His relationship with Noriko ĹŚishi and her adopted daughter, Akiko, gradually gives him something worth protecting.

Meanwhile, Godzilla emerges as a terrifying symbol of destruction. The creature represents the consequences of war and humanity’s inability to control the forces it unleashes.

The survivors eventually devise a plan to defeat Godzilla by using powerful underwater pressure changes. Shikishima also prepares to sacrifice himself by flying an explosive laden aircraft into the monster’s mouth.

However, he ultimately uses an ejection seat to survive, choosing life over the guilt that has haunted him.

The apparent victory comes with another emotional revelation. Noriko, who was believed to have died during Godzilla’s attack on Ginza, is still alive.

But a mysterious mark on her neck suggests that her survival may come with a dangerous consequence.

Godzilla Minus Zero ending explained: Ghidorah, betrayal and sacrifice

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up several years later, in 1949. Japan is still recovering from the war when another enormous monster appears.

This time, the threat is Ghidorah, one of Godzilla’s most recognisable enemies.

The emergence of the new monster brings back scientist Kenji Noda, who asks Shikishima to help confront the growing danger.

However, Shikishima is reluctant to become involved. He now has a family with Noriko and Akiko, and he wants to protect the peaceful life they have struggled to build.

There is another reason for his hesitation. Noriko survived the previous Godzilla attack because she was infected with the creature’s cells. The same biological connection that saved her could eventually prove fatal.

As the threat grows, scientists Noda and Kanji Murakami develop a plan to bring Godzilla and Ghidorah together.

Murakami possesses a device capable of attracting Godzilla through Noriko’s connection to the monster. The plan depends on her unusual biological condition, making her central to the operation.

However, the strategy has a darker motivation.

Murakami intends to use the confrontation as an opportunity to take revenge on the United States for the devastation caused by the atomic bombings.

The resulting battle takes place in Ginza, where Godzilla and Ghidorah clash in a spectacular confrontation.

Godzilla eventually defeats Ghidorah, but the victory comes at a terrible cost. Noda dies during the battle, leaving the remaining characters to deal with the consequences.

The Japanese military subsequently orders that Godzilla must not be killed. This creates another conflict, particularly for Shikishima and Noriko, who realise that Murakami’s plans could put them in danger.

The couple eventually turns against Murakami.

Fortunately, the scientist has experienced a change of heart. Noda had recently convinced him that revenge was not the answer, and Murakami ultimately allows the couple to escape.

He destroys his equipment and research, preventing his original plan from going any further.

However, his decision comes at a personal cost. The American military arrests him, potentially setting up another dangerous chapter in his story.

What happens to the Shikishima family?

The ending becomes particularly emotional when Shikishima and Noriko realise that their future may be even more uncertain than they expected.

With their involvement in the Godzilla operation exposed, the couple faces the possibility of being pursued by authorities.

They initially consider abandoning Akiko, believing that leaving her behind might give them a better chance of survival.

But the decision proves impossible.

Despite everything they have endured, Shikishima and Noriko cannot bring themselves to leave their daughter behind.

Instead, the family escapes together, setting off towards an uncertain future.

This conclusion reinforces one of the central themes of the Minus films: survival means more than simply staying alive.

Shikishima’s journey began with guilt and a desire to die. By the end of the sequel, he has become someone willing to fight for the people he loves.

The family may be forced into hiding, but their decision to remain together offers a hopeful ending amid the destruction.

Noriko’s condition remains another major unresolved question. Her connection to Godzilla could become increasingly important in a future film, especially if the creature continues to influence her health.

Will there be another Godzilla Minus movie?

Although Godzilla Minus Zero provides a meaningful conclusion to its central conflict, several unresolved storylines suggest that another sequel could be possible.

The Shikishima family is now on the run, leaving their future uncertain. Their struggle to escape government attention could provide a more personal storyline for the next instalment.

Murakami’s arrest also creates an intriguing possibility. The American military may attempt to exploit his research to develop ways of controlling Godzilla.

Such a storyline would fit naturally with the franchise’s longstanding themes of military ambition, scientific experimentation and the dangers of treating giant monsters as weapons.

There is also the possibility of introducing more Toho monsters.

Ghidorah’s appearance opens the door for other familiar creatures, including Rodan and Hedorah. Both monsters could provide opportunities to explore new environmental and political themes.

Mechagodzilla is another interesting possibility. A human built weapon designed to fight Godzilla could fit particularly well into the Minus series, especially given its focus on the destructive consequences of military technology.

The film also briefly imagines Godzilla attacking New York City. Although this sequence does not establish that the monster will actually travel to the United States, it raises the possibility of expanding the action beyond Japan.

Toho has not confirmed another Minus film, so these possibilities remain speculative.

Still, the sequel demonstrates that the franchise can build compelling stories around human characters while delivering the giant monster spectacle audiences expect.

If another film happens, it could continue exploring the relationship between humanity, scientific ambition and the consequences of war.

For now, Godzilla Minus Zero leaves the door open for another chapter while delivering a satisfying emotional conclusion to Shikishima’s journey.
