- Meta has introduced an AI-powered “Message Summaries” feature on WhatsApp, allowing users to catch up on unread messages quickly using private, on-device AI processing.
- The summaries are completely private, visible only to the user, and do not compromise WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption or allow Meta to access message content.
- Initially available in the U.S. with English support, the feature will expand to more countries and languages later this year.
- Users can enable or disable the feature under Settings > Chats > Private Processing, where individual AI tools like summaries and writing suggestions can be managed.
Meta is launching a new artificial intelligence feature on WhatsApp designed to make catching up on unread messages easier than ever.
The new tool, called Message Summaries, allows users to receive AI-generated summaries of unread chats without compromising privacy. This feature aims to streamline communication, especially for users returning to long or group conversations.
Summaries That Stay Private
One of the standout aspects of the new Message Summaries feature is its privacy-first design. Meta has emphasized that these summaries are completely private and only visible to the user who enables the feature. No one else in the chat can see that you’ve used AI to summarize your messages.
Meta also clarified that the summaries are generated using what it calls “Private Processing” technology. This ensures that messages remain encrypted and inaccessible to Meta or WhatsApp, even during the summarization process. The company noted in a blog post that neither the messages nor the summaries are ever visible to Meta’s servers.
Building on Existing Meta AI Tools
This new feature builds upon the AI functionality Meta introduced in April. Previously, users could interact with Meta AI to ask general questions or reference tagged messages for more context. However, until now, the AI could not access chat messages themselves.
With Message Summaries, WhatsApp can now use private, on-device processing to understand chat context and deliver helpful summaries or writing suggestions. Importantly, this doesn’t break the end-to-end encryption that WhatsApp is known for.
Rollout Begins in the U.S.
The feature is being introduced first to users in the United States and currently supports only English. Meta has plans to expand both language and regional availability later in the year. WhatsApp will display a small icon to indicate when the feature is available in a conversation.
Users can manage this tool through a new settings panel by navigating to Settings > Chats > Private Processing. This menu enables individuals to enable or disable specific AI features, such as message summaries or smart replies, according to their preferences.
Designed for Convenience, Built for Privacy
Meta’s goal with Message Summaries is to make it easier for users to stay informed in their conversations without needing to scroll through dozens or hundreds of unread messages.
The company is positioning this update as part of its broader mission to build smart features that respect user privacy.
