  • Meta is testing a new spoiler tag feature on Threads, allowing users to hide sensitive text or images that can be revealed with a click.
  • The feature aims to support respectful conversations around popular media, such as The Last of Us and The White Lotus, without spoiling content.
  • Spoiler tags can also be used for non-violative but potentially off-putting content, like injury photos or personal updates.
  • Currently available to select users, the feature is applied by highlighting content before posting and selecting “Mark as spoiler” from the menu.

Meta is introducing a new tool on Threads that aims to make conversations more inclusive and spoiler-free.

The social media giant has begun testing a spoiler tag feature, CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed in a post, marking a step forward in the platform’s efforts to accommodate the growing community of entertainment and pop culture fans.

What Is the Spoiler Tag?

The spoiler tag allows users to hide specific text or images within a post. This content appears grayed out and can only be revealed when another user chooses to click on it. The feature is widely used on platforms like Reddit and Discord to help users avoid unintentional exposure to key plot points in movies, television shows, or books.

Threads is now adopting this approach, enabling more sensitive or revealing content to be shared responsibly. For example, fans discussing a major twist in a show like The Last of Us can now do so without spoiling the moment for those who are not yet caught up.

Why Meta Is Adding This Feature

Meta says the new feature supports its mission to foster open and respectful conversations, particularly around trending pop culture topics.

A spokesperson explained that Threads has increasingly become a destination for fans to gather and discuss major entertainment moments, citing shows such as The White Lotus and The Last of Us as examples of series that regularly trended on the platform.

By giving users the ability to hide spoilers, Meta believes it can create a more welcoming environment where more people feel comfortable joining in on conversations.

“This is a nice quality-of-life improvement for our users,” Meta said in a press release, “and it allows for richer engagement without the worry of ruining major reveals.”

Beyond Entertainment: Other Uses for Spoiler Tags

While the primary purpose of spoiler tags is to shield key plot details, the feature also has other practical uses. Users can blur out text or images that may not violate content guidelines but could be unpleasant for some viewers.

For instance, someone posting injury updates or sharing graphic but non-offensive content, such as a photo of a sports-related bruise, can now hide those images behind a spoiler tag. This helps maintain a more user-sensitive environment without censoring the content entirely.

How the Feature Works

Currently in its testing phase, the spoiler tag feature is not yet available to all Threads users. Those who do have access can use it by highlighting the portion of text or image they want to hide before posting. A small menu will appear with an option to “Mark as spoiler.”

Once posted, the marked content will appear blurred or grayed out. Other users can then tap on the content if they wish to reveal what is hidden.

What’s Next for Threads

There is no official timeline for when the spoiler tag will roll out broadly. However, its initial introduction reflects Meta’s broader strategy to make Threads a more interactive, engaging, and considerate social platform.
