As of June 2024, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, updated its Privacy Policy, allowing the use of public data from users over 18 for training its artificial intelligence tools. This includes posts, comments, and photos shared publicly.
If you’re not comfortable with Meta using your data in this way, you have the right to object. Here’s a clear guide on how to opt out on Facebook and Instagram.
Opting Out on Facebook
Access the Privacy Center
Log into your Facebook account. Click your profile picture icon in the top-right corner to open a dropdown menu. From there, select Settings & Privacy, then go to the Privacy Center.
Submit an Objection
At the top of the Privacy Center page, you’ll find a notice about Meta’s use of data for AI training. In the second paragraph, you’ll see a hyperlinked word “object.” Click this to proceed.
Fill Out the Objection Form
You’ll be directed to a page titled “Object to Your Information Being Used for AI at Meta.” Enter the email address associated with your Facebook account.
While there’s a section to explain how this affects you, filling it out is optional, but it may strengthen your request. Once completed, click Submit.
Wait for Confirmation
Meta will review your request. You’ll receive an email confirming whether your objection has been accepted. If it’s approved, Meta will stop using your data for AI training.
Opting Out on Instagram
Access the Privacy Center
Log into your Instagram account and navigate to your profile. At the top-right corner, click the gear icon. From the menu, select Settings & Privacy and scroll down to the Privacy Center under “More Info and Support.”
Submit an Objection
In the Privacy Center, locate the notice regarding AI training. Like Facebook, you’ll see a hyperlinked “object” option. Click on it.
Complete the Form
Provide the email address associated with your Instagram account. Explain your reasons for objecting, if desired, and click Submit.
Confirmation Email
You’ll receive a confirmation email once Meta processes your request. Upon approval, your public data will no longer be used for training AI models.
Important Details to Remember
- Data Posted by Others: Opting out only covers the data you share directly. For example, if a friend uploads a group photo that includes you, Meta can still use it unless your friend also opts out.
- Approval Required: Meta must approve your objection before it takes effect. Ensure you submit accurate information and clearly express your concerns.
- Regional Variations: The opt-out process may be easier in regions with stricter privacy laws, such as the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Additional Steps to Protect Your Data
- Make Your Accounts Private: Changing your account settings to private can limit who sees your posts and reduce data exposure.
- Limit Public Posts: Be mindful of what you share publicly to minimize potential use in AI training.
- Stay Updated: Regularly check Meta’s Privacy Policy and settings to remain informed about data use and opt-out options.
While these steps allow you to take control of your data, it’s essential to understand that Meta’s approval is necessary for the objection to take effect.
Keep an eye on your email for confirmation after submitting your request.
