New Elden Ring Switch 2 footage shows fewer stutters and a steadier 30fps target

  • Docked performance looks better: New footage suggests fewer stutters during open world transitions, with the game targeting around 30fps.
  • Handheld mode remains uncertain: Recent recordings show frame rate drops below 30fps during demanding scenes, including boss encounters.
  • There is no 60fps mode: Switch 2 players should expect a roughly 30fps experience rather than the higher frame rate options available on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
  • The price is high: Tarnished Edition costs $79.99 and uses a Game Key Card that requires a large download.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is now looking more promising on Nintendo Switch 2, with fresh gameplay footage suggesting that some of the performance problems seen in earlier demonstrations may have been reduced. The upcoming version is scheduled to launch on August 28, giving players just days to decide whether the portable experience is worth the asking price.

The biggest improvement appears to be consistency. Earlier footage of the Switch 2 version showed noticeable stuttering, particularly when moving into Elden Ring’s large open world. More recent recordings show a steadier experience, especially when the console is connected to a television.

In docked mode, the game appears to target around 30 frames per second. There are moments where the frame rate can move above that figure, but this is not the 60fps experience available on more powerful consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

That 30fps target is not necessarily a deal breaker for a game like Elden Ring. The more important question is how consistently the game can maintain it during exploration, combat and some of the game’s more demanding encounters.

Japanese gaming publication Famitsu has tested a preview build of Tarnished Edition in both docked and handheld modes. The build is not the final retail version, so there is still room for additional optimisation before launch.

Handheld mode is still the biggest question

The more worrying results come from handheld play. While Famitsu’s tester described the game as smooth enough to play without particular discomfort, other recent recordings have shown the frame rate falling below 30fps during demanding moments.

Boss battles are particularly important here. Elden Ring can put considerable pressure on hardware when there are large enemies, complex effects and multiple animations happening at once. A stable frame rate matters even more during these encounters because precise timing is central to the combat system.

The Switch 2 has to operate within tighter power limits when used as a handheld device. Its processor and graphics hardware do not have access to the same power budget available when the console is connected to its dock. That can make sustained performance more difficult in technically demanding games.

Interestingly, the visual settings shown in handheld footage appear broadly similar to those seen in docked mode. That could make the portable version look impressive, but it also means the hardware has to work harder to deliver comparable visuals while operating within its lower power envelope.

For players who expect to spend most of their time playing Elden Ring on the move, this is likely to be the most important factor to consider. A few frame rate drops during exploration may not matter much, but repeated dips during boss fights could make certain encounters feel less consistent.

Switch 2 is not getting a 60fps performance mode

One of the limitations of Tarnished Edition is that players should not expect a 60fps performance option similar to the modes available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

That makes the quality of the 30fps experience particularly important. If the final version can stay close to its target most of the time, the Switch 2 edition could still offer a convincing way to experience FromSoftware’s open world adventure on a portable system.

Elden Ring has never been an easy game to run at a locked 60fps. Even versions designed for much more powerful hardware have had performance fluctuations. The Steam Deck is another example of how difficult it can be to balance the game’s visuals and frame rate on lower powered hardware.

Valve’s handheld can reach the 30fps range at 1280 by 800 with appropriate graphics adjustments, and updates have helped improve its performance over time. That provides some useful context for the Switch 2 version, which is also attempting to deliver a large open world experience on portable hardware.

The key difference is that Nintendo’s system is being positioned as a dedicated console experience rather than simply offering the PC version with heavily reduced settings. If the final Switch 2 build can combine relatively strong visuals with a reliable 30fps target, it could be a compelling option for players who value portability.

Price and Game Key Card could influence the decision

Performance is not the only issue facing potential buyers. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is priced at $79.99, making it a relatively expensive release for Switch 2 owners.

The physical release also uses a Game Key Card, which means buyers will need to download a substantial amount of data rather than having the entire game stored on the card. For players with limited internet connections or restricted storage space, that could be an important consideration.

The Tarnished Pack is another addition coming to the game. It introduces two starting classes along with new armour and weapons, and will also be available on other platforms for $4.99.

Ultimately, the Switch 2 edition looks more encouraging than some of the earlier footage suggested. The reduction in visible stuttering during open world transitions is a positive sign, and docked play appears to be settling around a reasonable 30fps target.

However, handheld performance remains unresolved. Preview footage showing dips below 30fps during boss encounters means buyers should keep their expectations realistic. The fact that the current build is not final also leaves open the possibility that further optimisation could improve the situation before launch.

For Switch 2 owners, the decision may therefore come down to priorities. If portability is the main attraction and occasional performance dips are acceptable, Tarnished Edition could still be one of the more ambitious games on the platform. If a consistently high frame rate is essential, the versions on more powerful consoles remain the safer choice.
