SpaceX and Tesla are taking another major step toward controlling their AI future with plans to invest an initial $16.8 billion in a new semiconductor manufacturing complex in Texas. The project, known as Terafab, is designed to strengthen the companies’ ability to produce advanced AI chips while reducing dependence on external suppliers.

The announcement marks one of the biggest manufacturing investments by Elon Musk’s companies and highlights the growing importance of AI hardware in industries ranging from autonomous vehicles to robotics and space technology.

Terafab Will Build AI Chips for Tesla and SpaceX

The Terafab project will be located in Grimes County, Texas, and is expected to become one of the world’s largest integrated semiconductor manufacturing facilities. According to SpaceX, the plant will handle multiple stages of chip production under a single roof, including fabrication, packaging and testing.

The companies plan to use the facility to manufacture advanced logic and memory chips that will power several of their future technologies. These include Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, Cybercab autonomous vehicles and SpaceX’s expanding AI infrastructure, including high performance computing systems that support its long term space ambitions.

SpaceX says the companies expect to require more than 1 terawatt of AI computing capacity in the coming years. Building chips internally is intended to help meet that growing demand while improving supply chain stability and reducing reliance on third party manufacturers.

Elon Musk said the project represents a major investment in American manufacturing while creating thousands of highly skilled jobs. He added that the facility will enable large scale AI chip production for applications both on Earth and in space.

Expansion Plans Could Push Investment Beyond $100 Billion

Although the initial commitment stands at $16.8 billion, Terafab is only the beginning of a much larger vision.

Earlier regulatory filings revealed that SpaceX had proposed an initial investment of $55 billion for the first major development phase. If every planned expansion moves forward, the total investment could eventually reach $119 billion, making it one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing projects ever announced in the United States.

SpaceX also confirmed that the facility will create at least 3,000 jobs, with additional employment likely as future expansion phases are completed.

The project reflects Musk’s broader strategy of bringing more critical technologies under direct control. Instead of depending heavily on outside chip manufacturers, SpaceX and Tesla are investing in their own production capabilities to support increasingly AI driven products.

Texas Continues to Attract Major Technology Investments

Texas has become the center of gravity for several of Elon Musk’s companies, and Terafab further expands that presence.

The Grimes County location sits near the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, which the companies plan to use as an industrial water source rather than drawing from local groundwater supplies. That decision is intended to support large scale manufacturing while reducing pressure on nearby communities.

The new facility also complements existing operations across the state, including SpaceX sites in Starbase, Bastrop and McGregor, along with Tesla’s growing Giga Texas campus.

Earlier this year, Tesla began construction on a research center at the North Campus of Giga Texas. That facility is expected to support research and development efforts connected to Terafab and future AI hardware programs.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the announcement, saying the investment reinforces the state’s reputation as a destination for large scale technology and manufacturing projects.

AI Integration Is Driving Musk’s Long Term Strategy

The Terafab announcement follows a series of moves that further integrate artificial intelligence across Musk’s businesses.

Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired Musk’s AI startup xAI in a deal aimed at expanding AI infrastructure, including plans for space based data centers. The combined company later completed a record breaking public listing, underscoring investor confidence in its AI focused strategy.

SpaceX has also partnered with Intel as part of its semiconductor plans. The collaboration supports Intel’s efforts to expand its contract chip manufacturing business while giving SpaceX additional expertise in advanced semiconductor production.

For Tesla, having direct access to advanced AI processors is becoming increasingly important as it accelerates work on autonomous driving systems, robotics and AI powered vehicles.
