Microsoft has introduced a new feature that allows seamless file sharing between iPhones and Windows PCs.
Dubbed an AirDrop-style experience, this update could revolutionize the way users share files across different operating systems, eliminating the previous hassle of using third-party apps like Google Drive or Dropbox.
What is the New File Sharing Feature?
Microsoft’s new feature leverages the Phone Link app for Windows and the Link to Windows app for iPhone to enable quick and easy file sharing.
Similar to Apple’s AirDrop, this update allows users to transfer files without the need for clunky email attachments or uploads.
With this feature, users can share files directly from their iPhone by selecting the share button in iOS, tapping “Link to Windows,” and choosing the target Windows device.
To share from a PC to an iPhone, users can simply right-click the file, select “Share,” and then choose “My Phone.” The straightforward process eliminates unnecessary steps, offering a smooth and integrated experience.
Who Can Use This Feature?
Currently, the feature is limited to members of the Windows Insider Program. To use it, the following requirements must be met:
- Phone Link app version: 1.24112.89.0 or higher on Windows.
- Link to Windows app version: 1.24112.73 or higher on iOS.
- Operating system compatibility: iOS 16 or later on iPhones, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 on PCs.
- Windows Insider membership: Required for now, though a broader rollout is anticipated soon.
Why is This Important?
Apple’s ecosystem has long been known for its seamless integration, with AirDrop being a standout feature for quickly transferring files between devices.
However, users with mixed ecosystems—those using iPhones alongside Windows PCs—have faced significant challenges.
Microsoft’s latest innovation bridges this gap, ensuring users no longer need to rely on cumbersome methods to transfer files.
Previously, transferring files between an iPhone and a Windows PC often involved uploading files to cloud services or emailing them to oneself, a time-consuming and inefficient process.
Microsoft’s new method eliminates these roadblocks, making cross-platform file sharing as simple as a few clicks.
Inspired by Android Integration
Microsoft has been steadily improving cross-device compatibility. In August 2024, a similar feature was introduced for file transfers between Windows and Android devices. Encouraged by its success, Microsoft has now expanded this functionality to Apple devices, further enhancing the interoperability of its ecosystem.
Future Availability
Although this feature is currently limited to Windows Insider Program users, Microsoft is expected to release it to the general public in the coming weeks.
Once rolled out, it promises to simplify life for users juggling devices from both Apple and Microsoft.
This development is another step in Microsoft’s efforts to make Windows more versatile and user-friendly in a world where many people operate across multiple device ecosystems.
With such integrations, the tech giant is helping its users save time and effort while enjoying a more connected experience.
