Apple has not made battery capacities a major part of its iPhone specification sheets for years, but European Union regulations have once again filled in the missing details. New energy labels for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max reveal the actual battery capacities inside Apple’s latest premium smartphones.
The figures point to a modest increase for the iPhone 18 Pro and a considerably larger upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Pro is listed with a 4,056mAh battery, while the Pro Max reportedly packs a 5,391mAh cell.
Compared with last year’s models, that works out to an increase of around 1.45% for the iPhone 18 Pro and approximately 11.8% for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In other words, the Pro Max is where Apple has made the most significant change.
Apple itself has highlighted the battery improvement on the larger model, describing it as the biggest increase in battery life the iPhone has received. The company claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback on a single charge. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours.
The Pro Max gets the bigger battery upgrade
The difference between the two models is worth noting because the iPhone 18 Pro has not received a dramatic increase in battery capacity. Its 4,056mAh figure represents only a small step up from its predecessor.
The Pro Max tells a different story. A battery capacity of 5,391mAh represents a substantial increase and could make the larger iPhone considerably more appealing to people who regularly use demanding apps, stream video, take lots of photos and video, or spend long periods away from a charger.
Battery capacity alone does not determine real world endurance. Apple’s processors, display technology, modem efficiency and software all play a role in how long an iPhone lasts. Even so, an increase of almost 12% gives the Pro Max a useful hardware advantage before those other improvements are taken into account.
There is also an important detail behind the EU figures. The phones covered by these energy labels are expected to be versions with a physical SIM card slot. US versions and certain other regional variants are eSIM only. That difference could potentially allow Apple to use the additional internal space for a slightly larger battery.
For buyers in the US, that means the battery capacity could ultimately be different from the figures now appearing on European labels. Apple has not publicly confirmed a separate US battery capacity, so that possibility should be treated cautiously until the devices are fully tested or regulatory documentation provides more information.
US iPhone 18 Pro Max has another difference
Battery capacity is not the only hardware detail attracting attention. There also appears to be a regional difference in the modem used by the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Code discovered in iOS 27 reportedly identifies two versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. One is associated with Apple’s C2 modem, while another is linked to a Qualcomm modem. The C2 version is expected to be used across the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max lineup in many markets, but the US iPhone 18 Pro Max reportedly retains Qualcomm hardware.
The Qualcomm component is believed to be the Snapdragon X85 modem. Apple has been moving further toward its own modem technology, making the continued use of Qualcomm hardware in one particular version of the Pro Max an interesting development.
At this stage, there is no clear indication that US buyers should expect a meaningful difference in everyday performance. Apple’s C2 modem is designed to improve on the company’s previous generation, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X85 is also a high end cellular platform.
The reason for the regional split is less obvious. One possibility is that Apple still has agreements or technical requirements that make Qualcomm hardware useful for particular networks or markets. However, Apple has not publicly explained why the US Pro Max appears to be different.
What buyers should take from this
For most customers, the battery story is probably more important than the modem distinction. The iPhone 18 Pro appears to offer a relatively small capacity increase, while the Pro Max receives a much more substantial upgrade.
The larger battery could be particularly useful for users who choose the Pro Max specifically for its larger screen and extensive camera capabilities. Those features can also increase power consumption, so extra battery capacity can help offset the demands of a bigger display and heavier use.
The modem difference is unlikely to be a deciding factor for most buyers unless further testing uncovers meaningful differences in network performance, efficiency or reception. Until independent reviews arrive, there is little reason to assume that the Qualcomm equipped US model will behave noticeably differently from versions using Apple’s C2 modem.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to begin reaching customers later this month, giving reviewers an opportunity to test Apple’s battery claims under real world conditions. Those tests should provide a much clearer picture of whether the larger battery translates into the kind of endurance improvement Apple is promising.
For now, the EU documentation gives us the clearest look yet at what Apple has changed inside its latest Pro iPhones. The headline is straightforward: the iPhone 18 Pro gets a small battery increase, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max receives a much more substantial one. US buyers may also get a slightly different internal configuration, with the Pro Max apparently continuing to use Qualcomm’s modem hardware.
