If you purchased an Anker Bluetooth speaker in 2023, check its serial number immediately. The company has issued a recall for nearly 80,000 units due to overheating lithium-ion batteries that could cause smoke or fires.

Affected Models and Details

The recall involves the following models:

  • Soundcore A3102016
  • PowerConf A3302011
  • PowerConf A3302031

These speakers were sold exclusively on Amazon and priced between $28 and $130. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported approximately 69,000 units sold in the U.S. and an additional 9,764 units in Canada.

To identify a potentially hazardous speaker, check the SN code printed underneath the device. You can verify this code on Anker’s website to confirm if your product is included in the recall.

What to Do if You Own an Affected Speaker

If you own one of the recalled models:

  1. Stop using the device immediately.
  2. Turn it off and disconnect it from any chargers or power sources.
  3. Contact Anker via their website for a free replacement.

The company, along with Amazon, has reportedly contacted all known buyers.

Reports of Overheating

The recall was prompted by 33 reported incidents of the speakers’ batteries overheating. In some cases, this caused smoke and even small fires.

While rare, these defects pose a serious safety risk and underline the importance of monitoring lithium-ion battery performance in portable devices.

Ongoing Safety Concerns in Tech Products

Anker isn’t the only tech company facing issues with overheating batteries this year. In September 2024, the company also recalled three of its smartphone backup batteries for similar concerns.

Other manufacturers have experienced similar problems recently:

  • Audio-Technica: Issued a warning in October about its 2024 earbuds overheating due to battery defects.
  • Belkin: Recalled its BoostCharge Pro (model BPD005) power banks in November, citing fire risks linked to manufacturing flaws.

These incidents highlight growing concerns about battery safety in consumer electronics, even among trusted brands.

Anker’s Response and Commitment

Despite these issues, Anker remains a trusted name for portable tech products, such as power banks and Bluetooth speakers.

Known for innovations like ActiveShield 2.0 temperature control, the company insists its products are generally safe.

However, the recent recalls underscore the need for stricter quality control, especially for high-demand products like portable batteries and speakers.

Final Thoughts

Anker has taken swift action by offering free replacements to affected customers. If you own a Soundcore A3102016 or a PowerConf A3302011/A3302031, check the serial number on Anker’s website to ensure your safety.
