Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, has taken its in-car experience to the next level by integrating ChatGPT into its voice assistant, Ida.
This new upgrade enhances Volkswagen’s existing voice control system, making it smarter, more conversational, and more user-friendly.
The update was showcased earlier this year at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), and now it’s rolling out across VW’s latest vehicles, including Jettas and electric cars.
What’s New in Volkswagen Cars?
Volkswagen has been using a voice AI partner called Cerence for quite some time. Now, with the power of ChatGPT combined with Cerence’s advanced technology, the Ida voice assistant can do much more than basic commands like adjusting climate controls or helping with navigation.
With this integration, Volkswagen drivers can now interact with their vehicles in a much more casual and intuitive way, enhancing the driving experience.
When drivers say, “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen,” depending on the model, they activate the assistant. Unlike older systems, Ida can now engage in longer, natural conversations and provide entertainment recommendations or even play a trivia quiz while you’re on the go.
For example, if you ask Ida to suggest nearby restaurants or attractions, it connects to the cloud and pulls relevant information. Using the Cerence Chat Pro platform, the system processes the query by accessing several databases, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to provide a detailed and accurate response.
Safety and Convenience
Safety is a top priority when driving, and Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT aims to make journeys safer by reducing the need for physical interaction with buttons or screens.
The system allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road while engaging in useful conversations with the car.
“We are proud to partner with Volkswagen Group to deliver immediate value to their drivers as they look to leverage generative AI while on the go,” said Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence. He added that these new capabilities will continue to grow, making the Ida voice assistant even more knowledgeable, capable, and valuable for drivers.
Data Privacy and Subscription Plans
Privacy concerns are always top of mind, especially when it comes to AI and personal data. Volkswagen has ensured that the AI does not access sensitive vehicle data, and all session information is deleted immediately after use.
This focus on privacy reassures users that their data will not be stored or misused.
As for availability, most of Volkswagen’s 2025 models will come with a free trial of this advanced voice assistant. However, other models might require a subscription to VW’s Plus Speech with AI, which is part of the company’s Car-Net system.
This integration could become a permanent feature in Volkswagen’s future models, making AI-driven interactions a daily part of driving.
Volkswagen Leads in the Race for AI Integration
Voice assistants in cars aren’t new. Many manufacturers have already integrated basic systems into their vehicles.
However, Volkswagen’s move to incorporate ChatGPT puts them ahead in the race to provide smarter, more human-like voice assistants.
While companies like Mercedes-Benz and others are also experimenting with AI-powered voice systems, Volkswagen’s early adoption of ChatGPT could give it a competitive edge.
Kai Grünitz, a member of Volkswagen’s Brand Board of Management, stated, “Volkswagen has a long tradition of democratizing technologies. As a volume manufacturer, we make these technologies accessible to large numbers of people.”
Grünitz emphasized that integrating ChatGPT into their voice assistant underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and improving customer experience.
Volkswagen’s ChatGPT integration is just the beginning. As more vehicles roll out with this advanced assistant, the driving experience is set to become not just more efficient but also more enjoyable, engaging, and safe.
