  • Opera’s Android browser now includes an eSIM service with 3GB of free data for three days in supported destinations.
  • The eSIM provides internet access to the entire phone, not just Opera’s browser.
  • Users can buy 3GB, 5GB or 10GB packages for 30 days after the free allowance ends.
  • The service requires a compatible unlocked Android phone running Android 10 or later.

Opera is giving its Android browser a new job beyond loading websites. The company has introduced a built in eSIM service that gives eligible travelers 3GB of free mobile data for three days in supported destinations.

The idea is straightforward. Instead of landing in another country and immediately searching for airport Wi Fi, buying a local SIM or paying for an expensive roaming package, travelers can use Opera’s eSIM to get online.

There is no requirement to enter card details or purchase a data package before using the introductory allowance. Opera also says users do not need to provide an email address to access the free data.

That could make the feature particularly useful immediately after landing, when having an internet connection matters most. A working connection can be used for maps, messaging, ride hailing, translation apps and other services that travelers often need before they have settled into their accommodation.

The important detail is that this is not simply data that works inside Opera’s browser. The eSIM provides connectivity for the phone itself, allowing other applications to use the mobile connection.

The free allowance lasts for three days

Opera’s introductory offer provides 3GB of mobile data for three days, although availability depends on the destination and device.

The company currently supports 47 destinations through the service. The free data is available in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Poland.

Travelers can install the eSIM before leaving home and activate it once they arrive at their destination. That is an important practical detail because installing an eSIM while standing in an airport without a reliable internet connection can be inconvenient.

After the free allowance has been used, travelers can buy additional packages directly through Opera. The available options include 3GB, 5GB and 10GB packages, with those paid plans offering 30 days of service.

The eSIM is data only, so it does not replace a user’s normal mobile number. Compatible phones can continue using their existing cellular number separately while the Opera eSIM provides mobile data.

The service also supports 5G where compatible local networks are available.

Opera is going beyond the traditional browser

The move fits with Opera’s broader attempt to make its mobile browser more useful when people are away from home.

The company already offers features such as a built in VPN and data saving tools. Adding mobile connectivity takes that strategy a step further by addressing a problem that comes before browsing even begins.

There is a practical argument behind the approach. A browser is not particularly useful when a traveler has no reliable connection, and international roaming can become expensive quickly.

Opera says its paid eSIM plans are around 33 percent cheaper on average than those offered by six major competitors. That comparison was based on 5GB US plans with prices recorded in August 2026, so pricing can vary depending on the country and package selected.

The service can also be used across multiple countries. Travelers who move between destinations can keep the same eSIM installed and add country specific data packages when required.

That could make the setup more convenient for people taking multi country trips, although travelers should still check coverage, pricing and compatibility before relying on the service.

There are a few catches to consider

The feature is currently limited to Android devices running Android 10 or later. The phone also needs to support eSIM functionality and must not be locked to a carrier that prevents the use of another network.

The free 3GB allowance is also temporary rather than an unlimited travel connection. Three gigabytes can be plenty for navigation, messaging and light browsing, but travelers who regularly stream video, upload large files or use their phone as a hotspot could consume it quickly.

There is another point worth remembering. Although Opera lets users install the eSIM before traveling, the initial setup still needs a reliable internet connection. It is therefore sensible to complete the installation before boarding a flight rather than waiting until arrival.

Opera’s new feature is ultimately less about replacing traditional mobile carriers and more about removing one of the small headaches associated with international travel. Having a few gigabytes of ready to use data can be enough to get through those crucial first hours in a new country without immediately searching for a SIM shop or connecting to unsecured public Wi Fi.

For Opera, the eSIM also gives its mobile browser a feature that most competing browsers do not currently offer. It turns the browser from something that simply consumes an internet connection into part of the process of getting that connection in the first place.
