Apple Bets On Advanced Heart Monitoring to Drive Watch Growth in India

Apple is putting heart health at the centre of its Apple Watch strategy in India as the broader smartwatch market continues to lose momentum. While fewer consumers are buying smartwatches overall, demand for more advanced models is moving in the opposite direction, giving Apple an opportunity to position its latest Watches as health focused devices rather than simple extensions of the smartphone.

The company is placing particular emphasis on the improved heart monitoring capabilities of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. According to Apple, the redesigned sensing system can capture heart rate readings as frequently as once every five seconds in the background, including when the wearer is moving.

That represents a significant change in how frequently the Watch can collect heart related data. Apple says the increased monitoring has been designed without compromising battery life, an important consideration for a feature that operates continuously in the background.

Eric Jue, director of Apple Watch Worldwide Product Marketing, said the new sensor was developed using lessons Apple has gathered from years of work on health sensing. The objective, he explained, was to create a system capable of delivering heart rate and heart rate variability information at a much higher frequency.

India’s smartwatch market is changing

Apple’s focus comes at a time when India’s overall smartwatch market is facing pressure. Data from IDC shows that smartwatch shipments in India declined 4 percent year on year to 6.4 million units during the April to June quarter of 2026.

However, the decline does not tell the entire story.

The premium end of the market is expanding rapidly. Shipments of advanced smartwatches increased 94.8 percent during the same period. Their share of the overall smartwatch category also increased from 2.2 percent to 4.5 percent.

Apple operates in this advanced segment alongside companies such as Samsung and Garmin. IDC identified all three brands as major players in the category and said they recorded strong growth, with sales of previous generation devices also contributing to the increase.

IDC has not disclosed Apple’s individual market share in India for the quarter.

The numbers point towards a shift in consumer behaviour. Instead of buying inexpensive smartwatches primarily for notifications, step tracking and basic fitness features, a growing group of buyers appears willing to spend more on devices with deeper health and fitness capabilities.

That is an important market opportunity for Apple.

New sensor brings more frequent readings

The new heart sensing system is not simply a software feature that Apple can add to older Watches through an update. Apple says the capability depends on redesigned hardware.

Steve Waydo, Apple’s director of health sensing, described the higher frequency background measurements as a hardware enabled feature. The redesigned system changes both the optical components used for sensing and the internal chips that process the information.

That hardware change means older Apple Watch models cannot replicate the same level of continuous heart monitoring through software alone.

For users, the practical benefit is the ability to build a more detailed picture of heart activity throughout the day. More frequent measurements can provide Apple with additional data points covering different situations, including periods when the user is active rather than sitting still.

Heart rate variability is also part of Apple’s focus. HRV is a measurement related to changes in the time between heartbeats and is commonly used in fitness and wellness tracking. It can provide additional context alongside standard heart rate measurements, although such data should not be treated as a substitute for professional medical evaluation.

Apple’s growing emphasis on health also reflects the wider direction of the smartwatch industry. As basic smartwatch features become increasingly common, manufacturers are looking for more specialised capabilities that can justify higher prices.

Apple expands health research in India

Apple is also working with doctors in Delhi on investigator supported studies involving the Apple Watch and Indian users in clinical settings.

The research is notable because health data and wearable performance can vary across populations, environments and usage patterns. Studies involving local users could help researchers examine how Apple’s sensing technology performs under real world conditions in India.

Apple has steadily expanded the health capabilities of the Watch over the years, moving beyond conventional fitness tracking towards features designed to provide users with more information about their cardiovascular activity.

The company’s challenge is to make these capabilities useful without giving consumers the impression that a smartwatch is a replacement for medical equipment or a doctor.

For Apple, the Indian market presents an interesting contrast. The overall smartwatch category is shrinking, but the premium segment is growing quickly. That creates a clearer opening for brands that can offer advanced hardware and health features rather than competing purely on price.

The latest Apple Watch models therefore arrive at a time when the definition of a smartwatch is changing. Basic tracking and notifications are no longer enough to distinguish premium devices. Health monitoring, sensing accuracy, software features and the ability to turn large amounts of data into useful information are becoming increasingly important.

Apple’s new heart sensing system is part of that broader shift. By increasing the frequency of background readings and investing in clinical research in India, the company is making health one of the main reasons to consider its latest Watch models.

Whether consumers see enough value in those additional capabilities to move towards premium smartwatches will be an important factor for the market in the months ahead.
