Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to post another record quarterly profit as demand for artificial intelligence chips continues to drive growth across the global semiconductor industry. The world’s largest contract chipmaker has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, with technology companies pouring billions of dollars into the infrastructure needed to power increasingly advanced AI systems.

Analysts expect TSMC’s net profit for the third quarter of 2026 to rise by 65% year on year to NT$746.3 billion, equivalent to around $23.4 billion. If the forecast proves accurate, the company will deliver its sixth consecutive quarter of record earnings, extending a remarkable run driven by demand for high performance computing chips and advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

The company is scheduled to release its quarterly results on Thursday, alongside an earnings call where investors will be looking for fresh guidance on revenue growth, capital spending and its plans to expand manufacturing capacity in the United States.

TSMC’s latest performance also highlights how central the company has become to the AI industry. Its advanced manufacturing technology supports major customers, including Nvidia and Apple, while its position in the semiconductor supply chain gives it a crucial role in the development of next generation computing hardware.

AI Boom Continues to Drive TSMC’s Record Growth

Strong demand for AI infrastructure remains the biggest factor behind TSMC’s recent financial performance. Technology companies are investing heavily in data centres, AI accelerators and advanced computing systems, increasing the need for powerful chips that can handle increasingly complex workloads.

TSMC manufactures many of the advanced processors used in these systems. Its expertise in producing chips at smaller process nodes, including 3 nanometres, has helped it maintain a leading position as customers seek better performance and energy efficiency.

The company’s third quarter revenue has already provided a strong indication of its momentum. TSMC reported a 50% year on year increase in revenue for the quarter, setting a new record and exceeding market expectations.

Investors will now be watching to see whether the expected profit growth matches that impressive revenue performance. Any quarterly net profit above NT$706.56 billion would establish a new company record and mark its eleventh consecutive quarter of profit growth.

The outlook for the remainder of the year is another important consideration. Morgan Stanley analyst Charlie Chan expects TSMC could raise its full year revenue growth forecast to the low to mid 40% range, compared with its existing guidance of more than 40%. The potential upgrade reflects particularly strong demand for its 3 nanometre chips.

However, the strength of AI demand does not eliminate every risk. Semiconductor manufacturing requires substantial investment, and expanding production capacity takes time. TSMC must balance customer demand against the costs of building factories, installing equipment and maintaining its technological lead.

TSMC’s US Expansion Plans Face Fresh Questions

Beyond its financial results, investors are likely to focus on TSMC’s growing manufacturing presence in the United States. The company has committed $265 billion towards building chip manufacturing facilities in Arizona, including an additional $100 billion investment announced earlier in 2026.

The expansion is intended to increase production capacity in the United States and strengthen TSMC’s ability to serve customers that want advanced semiconductors manufactured closer to their operations.

Texas has also emerged as a possible destination for future investment. Reports in September indicated that TSMC was evaluating a potential expansion into the state. The discussion gained further attention after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his companies would build and operate the Terafab AI chip complex, with TSMC potentially subleasing part of the facility.

Any move into Texas would raise questions about the timing and scale of TSMC’s next phase of expansion. Charlie Chan believes additional capacity could become necessary as customer demand grows and space at the Arizona site becomes more limited over the next five years.

Not everyone sees an immediate need for another major investment. Phelix Lee, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar, has argued that TSMC still has planned Arizona facilities that have yet to be built. From that perspective, Texas could be a longer term option for expansion during the 2030s or 2040s rather than an urgent requirement.

The decision will involve more than simply finding additional factory space. Access to skilled workers, suppliers, infrastructure and government support will also influence where the company chooses to manufacture its most advanced chips.

For investors, the key question is whether TSMC can expand quickly enough to meet demand without putting unnecessary pressure on its finances or operational efficiency.

Higher Spending Signals Confidence in Future AI Demand

TSMC’s investment plans underline the scale of the opportunity it sees in the semiconductor market. During its July earnings call, the company raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to between $60 billion and $64 billion, up from its previous forecast of $52 billion to $56 billion at the upper end.

Such spending reflects the high cost of maintaining a leading position in advanced chip manufacturing. Building new fabrication plants, installing specialised equipment and developing next generation production processes require years of planning and significant financial resources.

The investment also signals confidence that demand for advanced semiconductors will remain strong enough to justify additional capacity. AI computing is becoming an increasingly important market for chipmakers, with cloud providers and technology companies continuing to develop infrastructure for training and running AI models.

TSMC’s stock market performance reflects investor enthusiasm. Its Taipei listed shares have gained 63% so far in 2026, broadly tracking the wider Taiwanese market, which has risen 69% over the same period.

The company’s market capitalisation stands at around $2.1 trillion, making it Asia’s most valuable company and placing it at roughly twice the market value of South Korean rival Samsung Electronics.

Still, maintaining that momentum will depend on more than a single strong earnings report. Investors will want evidence that AI related demand remains durable, that manufacturing investments deliver adequate returns and that expansion plans can be executed without major delays.

TSMC’s upcoming results should provide a clearer picture of how the company intends to navigate these challenges. Its profit forecast points to another exceptional quarter, but guidance on future revenue, capital expenditure and US manufacturing plans could prove just as important as the headline earnings figure.

For now, the AI boom continues to provide a powerful growth engine for the semiconductor giant. The next test will be whether TSMC can turn today’s extraordinary demand into sustainable growth over the coming years.
