According to a local industry report, Samsung is considering increasing the wholesale price of the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus and Galaxy S26 Ultra by KRW 149,600 from October 1. However, the company has not confirmed that the increase will go ahead, so the reported figure should not be treated as a final price change.
The timing would be unusual. Smartphone manufacturers typically establish flagship pricing around launch and then rely on discounts and promotions as a device moves through its lifecycle. A price increase several months after launch would therefore be an unexpected move for Samsung.
The bigger story, however, may have less to do with the Galaxy S26 itself and more to do with the rapidly rising cost of memory.
Memory costs are becoming a bigger problem for phone makers
Modern smartphones depend heavily on DRAM and NAND storage, and both components have become considerably more expensive in 2026.
Counterpoint Research has reported that smartphone memory prices increased by more than 80 percent from one quarter to the next during the second quarter of 2026. Counterpoint also found that DRAM has become the most expensive component in premium smartphones, overtaking the main application processor. At the same time, the bill of materials for premium smartphones increased by roughly 50 percent year over year in the second quarter.
That helps explain why Samsung could be reviewing its pricing strategy.
Samsung has an advantage that many other smartphone brands do not. The company has major operations across the memory and semiconductor industries, along with a large manufacturing and supply chain network. Those businesses could help reduce some of the pressure created by higher component prices.
Even so, there is only so much manufacturers can absorb. If component prices remain elevated, companies have several choices. They can accept lower margins, change hardware specifications, renegotiate supply arrangements or pass some of the additional cost to customers.
Galaxy S26 could be part of a wider smartphone price increase
The reported Galaxy S26 price change also comes at a time when smartphone prices are rising across several markets.
Counterpoint’s September 2026 data indicates that more than 40 percent of smartphone models became more expensive during 2026. Average retail prices worldwide increased by around 15 percent, while newly launched models were approximately 25 percent more expensive than comparable models from a year earlier.
India has seen an especially notable increase. According to Counterpoint, average smartphone prices in the Indian market rose by around 21 percent during 2026.
That matters because India is one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, with buyers ranging from budget focused consumers to premium customers looking for flagship devices. Higher component costs can therefore affect phones across several price categories.
Memory is not necessarily the only reason for those increases. Exchange rates, transportation expenses, manufacturing costs, taxes, supply agreements and changing product mixes can all influence the final retail price.
Still, the sharp rise in memory costs gives manufacturers another reason to reconsider pricing.
India Galaxy S26 price remains uncertain
For buyers in India, the South Korean report should not be interpreted as confirmation of an upcoming price increase.
Samsung has not announced a similar change for India, the US or other international markets. Smartphone pricing is often handled differently from one region to another, and manufacturers have to consider local taxes, distribution costs, currency movements, retailer margins and competition before setting prices.
There is also a difference between wholesale pricing and the amount consumers eventually pay in stores. Even if Samsung increases the wholesale price in South Korea, the effect on retail prices elsewhere would not necessarily be identical.
