4chan Hacked Sensitive Data Leaked in Major Cyberattack

On April 15, 2025, the infamous internet forum 4chan fell victim to a major cyberattack that exposed a wealth of internal data, shaking the foundation of one of the web’s most controversial platforms.

For those who may not know, 4chan is an anonymous image board where users post everything from internet memes to shocking and often extremist content.

This hack has sparked widespread concern about the site’s security and the potential consequences for its moderators and users, given the platform’s ties to alt-right movements and political extremism.

The breach became apparent when 4chan’s website started experiencing intermittent outages, rendering it inaccessible for hours. Reports of the downtime flooded social media, and soon, a rival online message board became a hub for celebrating the attack.

According to posts on this board, the hacker responsible claimed to have been inside 4chan’s systems for over a year, operating undetected.

This prolonged access allowed them to extract sensitive materials, including screenshots of the site’s administrative back end, source code, and templates used to ban users—tools typically reserved for the site’s moderators.

These leaked materials began circulating online, offering a rare look into the mechanics of 4chan’s operations.

Among the most troubling revelations was the exposure of a list allegedly identifying 4chan’s moderators and “janitors,” volunteer users who help manage the site. Janitors can delete posts or threads, while moderators have broader powers, such as accessing users’ IP addresses.

The leak of their personal information is particularly alarming given 4chan’s history of “doxxing,” where users maliciously reveal others’ private details. One janitor, speaking anonymously, confirmed the leaked data appeared genuine, expressing shock at the scale of the breach.

“This is obviously an issue of greater magnitude than anything we’ve seen before,” they said, noting that while leaks had occurred in the past, this incident was far more severe.

The hack’s implications are profound, especially considering 4chan’s reputation as a hub for alt-right rhetoric and extremist ideologies.

The site’s political boards have been linked to real-world violence, such as the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, where the attacker was a longtime 4chan user, and the 2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting, where the perpetrator echoed similar online rhetoric.

The exposure of moderators’ and janitors’ identities could put them at risk of harassment or worse, particularly in a community where anonymity is prized but often weaponized. The janitor acknowledged this danger, stating, “The possibility that we could be exposed has always been there.”

In addition to the moderation team, the hacker reportedly gained access to personal information belonging to 4chan Pass subscribers. These users pay for premium features, like bypassing post limits and accessing a VIP board.

The compromise of their data raises serious privacy concerns, as subscribers could face risks ranging from identity theft to targeted attacks.

The janitor suggested that the hacker’s ability to “effectively take over” the site was likely more damaging to 4chan’s operations than the leaked screenshots themselves, highlighting the severity of the breach.

Attempts to contact 4chan for comment went unanswered, leaving the public in the dark about the full scope of the attack and the measures being taken to address it.

For a platform built on the promise of anonymity, this breach strikes at its core, undermining user trust and exposing vulnerabilities.

4chan has long been a double-edged sword on the internet, birthing iconic memes like Pepe the Frog and wojaks while also serving as a breeding ground for hate speech and conspiracy theories, including the QAnon movement. Its influence, both cultural and political, cannot be understated.
