It’s been a long wait for news about a foldable iPhone, and now it seems like we might know why. Apple has put the project on hold because they can’t find a folding screen they’re happy with.
According to Fixed Focus Digital on the Chinese social network Weibo (via MacRumors), Apple has been trying out screens that bend in the middle, but none of them meet their standards for a foldable iPhone.
Samsung is one of the companies that supplies folding displays, but even their screens aren’t passing Apple’s tests. Samsung makes its own foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5.
We’re not sure if Apple is unhappy with how the screen looks or how durable it is. It’s also worth noting that while Fixed Focus Digital is a well-known tech vlogger, they haven’t leaked any Apple news before, so we should take this with a pinch of salt.
There have been so many rumors about an iPhone Fold, so it’s likely that Apple is working on something like it. But whether it will ever come out is still uncertain.
Apple usually lets other companies like Samsung introduce new tech first before adding it to their own phones. This was the case with fingerprint sensors and wireless charging, and it seems like it will be the same with folding displays.
Another possibility is that Apple might release a folding iPad before a folding iPhone. A bigger screen might be easier for them to get right.
