- Google Pay will be discontinued in the US on June 4, 2024.
- Users can continue to transfer balances until the cutoff date; afterward, only transactions through the website will be possible.
- Most payment features will now be available in Google Wallet.
The news just came out that Google Pay, the payment app we all know, will stop working on June 4, 2024, in the US and in most other places except Singapore and India.
Google says they’re doing this because not many people are using Google Pay anymore, and most folks have already switched to Google Wallet. They say Google Wallet is used a lot more in the US than Google Pay.
If you’re using Google Pay right now, you can still use it until June 4 to check your balance and send money to your bank account. But after that, you can only do this stuff on the Google Pay website, not the app. You won’t be able to send money to friends anymore using the app either.
It’s not a big surprise that Google Pay is going away because Google Wallet has been the main app for a while now. But there’s a problem, several people still call it Google Pay, not Google Wallet. Many shops have stickers saying “Google Pay” too.
Google Wallet is a great app, but if people don’t know it’s called that now, it could cause confusion. If Google just changes the stickers in stores and doesn’t inform people about the name change, it could make some customers worried about using the app. This is very important especially with all the news about data being stolen online.
Google also tried to make a physical card you could use with Google Wallet, but it didn’t work out. This didn’t help the confusion about the app’s name either.
Let’s hope that Google has a good plan to tell people about the name change. Otherwise, it could cause problems in the future.
