Apple Vision Pro pre-orders kicked off last week, and the sales figures are in: between 160,000 and 180,000 units have already flown off the shelves, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. But hold your horses if you’re hoping to Netflix and chill with the new headset.
Greg Peters, one of the bigwigs over at Netflix, spilled the beans in an interview with Stratechery: there’s no Netflix app for the Vision Pro. Why, you ask? Well, apparently, there’s just not enough potential subscribers sporting these fancy headsets to make it worth Netflix’s while to bother with all the hassle of porting their app over.
But fear not, binge-watchers! Peters isn’t slamming the door shut on the idea forever. Netflix might hop on the Vision Pro bandwagon down the line, but for now, they’re content to sit back and watch how things unfold.
And Netflix isn’t the only party pooper here. YouTube and Spotify are also giving the Vision Pro the cold shoulder, opting to let users surf through their browsers instead. Talk about playing hard to get!
But hey, at least Apple’s own streaming service, Apple TV+, is showing up to the party. And they’re not just bringing snacks; they’ve cooked up something called “Apple Immersive Video” – 180° 3D footage in glorious 8K resolution, complete with Spatial Audio. Now that’s what I call making an entrance!
And before you start mourning the lack of Netflix VR action on your new headset, remember: Netflix did dabble in VR back in 2015, even roping in the Stranger Things gang for a 360° video (which they promptly dumped on YouTube). So hey, there’s still plenty of virtual fun to be had – just not on the Vision Pro, for now.
