The 8849 Tank X Is a Rugged Phone With a Projector and a Battery That Won’t Quit

  • The 8849 Tank X has a built in 220 lumen projector for portable big screen viewing.
  • It includes a 1,200 lumen camping light and a 64MP night vision camera for outdoor use.
  • The battery is enormous at 17,600mAh and supports 120W charging.
  • It is extremely thick and heavy, making it a niche rugged phone rather than a mainstream option.

If you’re tired of smartphones blending into one shiny slab after another, the 8849 Tank X is the kind of device that snaps you out of that boredom instantly. This is not a phone trying to be slim, stylish, or subtle.

It is a rugged monster built for people who spend time outdoors, work in demanding environments, or simply want a device that can do things most phones never will.

The headline feature is right there in the name: this “brick of a phone” packs a projector into its body. Not a gimmicky accessory or a bolt on module, but a built in projector designed to turn any nearby surface into a makeshift screen.

Add in a camping light, a night vision camera, and a battery that looks more like something you’d find in a power bank, and you start to see what 8849 is going for here.

It is niche, it is unapologetically chunky, and it feels like a product made for a very specific kind of user. But for that user, it could be surprisingly tempting.

A projector in your pocket, brighter than you would expect

The Tank X includes a 220-lumen projector built directly into the phone. That is still nowhere near the brightness of a dedicated home cinema projector, but for something living inside a smartphone body, it is genuinely impressive. It is also a clear step up from the company’s earlier projector-equipped models, such as the Tank 4, which offered 100 lumens.

The idea is simple: prop the phone up, aim it at a surface, and you have an instant big screen setup. The marketing leans hard into outdoor scenarios, showing the Tank X being used in nature, which is certainly a vibe. In reality, the projector will likely be more practical in dim environments than under open skies, but the appeal is easy to understand.

For campers, off grid travellers, or anyone who likes the idea of movie night without carrying extra gear, it is a fun and oddly logical feature. Even beyond entertainment, having a projector on hand could help with quick presentations or group viewing when you are away from a proper display.

Built for the wild, powered by an absurd battery

The projector is the flashy feature, but the battery is what really makes the Tank X stand out. At 17,600mAh, it sits in a category most mainstream phones do not even attempt. That kind of capacity suggests serious endurance, whether you are navigating trails, working long shifts, or using the device as a backup power source for other gadgets.

Even better, it supports 120W charging, which helps balance out the obvious downside of a battery this large: refilling it could otherwise take ages.

Then there is the camping light. The Tank X includes a 1,200 lumen light, which is far beyond what a typical phone flashlight can manage. This is the kind of feature that makes sense in real outdoor use, whether you are setting up a tent, searching through gear at night, or dealing with a power cut.

The display is also solid for a rugged phone, with a 6.78 inch screen at 1080 x 2460 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, meaning scrolling and general use should feel smooth.

Cameras, performance, and the unavoidable size problem

On the camera side, the Tank X comes loaded. You get a 50MP main camera, a 64MP night vision camera, and an 8MP telephoto with 3x zoom. There is also a 50MP front camera, which is more than most rugged phones bother with.

The night vision camera in particular fits the theme perfectly. It is not something everyone needs, but in the right setting it could be genuinely useful, especially for nighttime outdoor use.

Performance is handled by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset, paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. That should put it comfortably in the “more than enough” category for everyday use, along with plenty of room for offline maps, videos, photos, and apps.

Of course, all of this comes at a cost, and that cost is size. The Tank X is huge, measuring 31.9mm thick and weighing 750g. That is not “a bit heavy” by phone standards, that is “you will notice it every time you pick it up.” It is the kind of device you commit to carrying, not one you casually slip into your pocket and forget about.

Still, that is the trade off for the projector, the massive battery, and the built in lighting. This phone is not chasing mainstream appeal, it is chasing functionality in places where most phones would struggle.

The 8849 Tank X is set to launch on February 1, with pricing still unconfirmed. If you want a phone that can double as a mini cinema, a torch, and a survival tool, this one is definitely worth watching.
