  • M5 chip delivers faster CPU, GPU and major AI performance gains
  • Base storage doubles to 512GB with faster SSD and up to 4TB option
  • Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 improve wireless performance
  • Same thin fanless design with up to 18 hours of battery life

Apple has refreshed its most popular laptop with a meaningful upgrade. The new MacBook Air M5 builds on a winning formula and adds sharper performance, stronger AI capabilities and double the starting storage, all while keeping the thin, lightweight design that has made the Air a favorite among students, professionals and business users alike.

Available in 13 inch and 15 inch sizes, the latest MacBook Air keeps its familiar aluminum chassis but introduces Apple’s newest silicon, the M5 chip. It promises a noticeable leap in speed over previous generations, especially for AI driven tasks, creative workloads and demanding multitasking.

M5 chip brings serious performance gains

At the heart of the new MacBook Air is Apple’s M5 processor. It features a 10 core CPU and up to a 10 core GPU, alongside a Neural Accelerator built into each core. Apple says this design dramatically improves AI performance, making the laptop far more capable when running machine learning tools, on device large language models and intelligent features built into macOS.

Compared with older Apple silicon, the gains look significant. AI video enhancement, 3D rendering with ray tracing and image processing all see strong boosts over the M1 generation, and measurable improvements over the M4. Web browsing and general productivity also benefit from the faster CPU core, which Apple claims is the quickest it has ever shipped in a MacBook Air.

The GPU receives attention too, with enhanced shader cores and a third generation ray tracing engine. That should translate into smoother gaming, faster 3D design work and improved creative performance in apps such as Blender and Affinity. Unified memory bandwidth climbs to 153GB per second, helping apps launch faster and multitasking feel more fluid.

Double the storage and faster SSD speeds

One of the most practical upgrades comes in the form of storage. The MacBook Air M5 now starts with 512GB as standard, doubling the previous base configuration. For users juggling large photo libraries, video projects or development environments, that extra space will be immediately welcome.

Apple also says the SSD is faster, delivering up to twice the read and write performance of the previous generation. In real world terms, that means quicker file transfers, shorter wait times when importing media and snappier overall responsiveness when working with large documents or creative assets.

For the first time, the MacBook Air can be configured with up to 4TB of storage, pushing it closer to the territory once reserved for the MacBook Pro line.

Same iconic design with smarter wireless

Physically, the MacBook Air remains instantly recognizable. It retains the fanless aluminum design that keeps the laptop silent under load. The 13.6 inch and 15.3 inch Liquid Retina displays continue to offer up to 500 nits of brightness and support for one billion colors, making them well suited to content creation and media consumption.

Battery life remains strong at up to 18 hours, which Apple says is up to six hours longer than Intel based MacBook Air models. Fast charging is supported, helping users top up quickly between classes or meetings.

Connectivity gets a boost thanks to Apple’s new N1 wireless chip. The MacBook Air M5 supports Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, promising improved speed, lower latency and better reliability in crowded networks. It also includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe charging and support for up to two external displays, making it more versatile for desk setups.

The laptop is available in sky blue, midnight, starlight and silver, maintaining Apple’s focus on subtle yet stylish finishes.

macOS Tahoe and a bigger AI push

The hardware upgrade is closely tied to software. macOS Tahoe introduces a refreshed design language and deeper integration of Apple Intelligence features. Live Translation in Messages, smarter Reminders and more capable Shortcuts are designed to take advantage of the M5’s improved AI performance.

Continuity features also expand, allowing users to handle calls from a nearby iPhone directly on their Mac and interact with Live Activities via iPhone Mirroring. A new Edge Light effect aims to improve lighting during video calls, working alongside the 12MP Center Stage camera and three microphone array.

Apple continues to emphasize sustainability. The MacBook Air M5 uses 100 percent recycled aluminum in its enclosure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery, with manufacturing powered in part by renewable energy. Packaging is fully fiber based.

Pricing starts at 1099 dollars for the 13 inch model and 1299 dollars for the 15 inch version, with education discounts available.
