  • Ubisoft has acquired the free-to-play MOBA March of Giants from Amazon Games
  • The original development team is joining Ubisoft to continue work on the game
  • Leadership includes veterans behind Rainbow Six Siege and major AAA projects
  • New updates will add content and systems aimed at long-term growth

Ubisoft has officially acquired the rights to March of Giants, a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena that was previously in development at Amazon Games’ Montreal studio.

The move signals Ubisoft’s renewed intent to compete more aggressively in the live service and MOBA space, while also reuniting the project with creative leaders who helped shape some of the publisher’s most successful titles.

Development of March of Giants will now continue internally at Ubisoft, with the original development team transitioning over to the  ompany to carry the project forward.

Work is already underway on the game’s next major update, following a closed alpha that offered an early look at its unusual blend of tactical strategy and action driven combat.

At its core, the acquisition is less about rescuing a stalled project and more about consolidation. Ubisoft is effectively reclaiming a game led by veterans who once helped define its creative identity.

A Leadership Team with Deep Ubisoft Roots

The project is being led by two figures well known within Ubisoft’s history. Senior production lead Alex Parizeau previously served as managing director at Ubisoft Toronto, where he oversaw multiple large scale AAA productions.

Creative direction is handled by Xavier Marquis, best known as the original creative director behind Rainbow Six Siege, one of Ubisoft’s most successful long running live service games.

For Marquis, the move represents a return to familiar ground. He described the transition as coming full circle, noting that many of the team’s most meaningful creative experiences were built during their time at Ubisoft.

With March of Giants, he believes the studio now has the backing needed to fully realize the game’s potential.

That confidence is not incidental. Ubisoft has spent nearly a decade refining its approach to competitive multiplayer through Siege, learning difficult lessons about long term balance, community engagement, and content cadence.

Those lessons could prove critical for a new MOBA attempting to find space in an already crowded genre.

What Makes March of Giants Different

March of Giants is not a traditional top down MOBA. It is a 4v4 tactical experience that blends real time strategy elements with lane based combat, placing players in control of towering giant characters battling across dense urban environments.

While giants dominate the battlefield physically, players also command battalions of much smaller units, adding a layer of strategic oversight that goes beyond individual hero mechanics.

This dual scale design is the game’s defining hook. Players must balance moment to moment combat decisions with broader battlefield control, managing units, positioning, and timing rather than relying solely on mechanical skill.

Early alpha feedback suggested the concept resonated with players, even if the systems themselves still needed refinement.

According to Parizeau, the closed alpha represented a meaningful milestone rather than a finish line. The next phase of development is expected to expand the roster of giants, deepen competitive modes, and introduce foundational systems designed to support long term growth.

In practical terms, that likely means progression systems, matchmaking improvements, and infrastructure aimed at sustaining an active player base over time.

Ubisoft’s Strategic Bet on a New IP

From Ubisoft’s perspective, March of Giants represents an opportunity to enter one of gaming’s most competitive arenas with a new intellectual property rather than another sequel.

Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s co founder and CEO, framed the acquisition as a chance to bring something fresh and dynamic to players while strengthening the company’s position in multiplayer focused genres.

Importantly, Ubisoft is not starting from scratch. Many members of the March of Giants team have previously worked at Ubisoft, which reduces integration risk and allows the studio to move quickly.

The publisher’s global infrastructure, live service experience, and marketing reach could give the game a level of support that would be difficult to achieve elsewhere.

Still, success is far from guaranteed. The MOBA market is dominated by entrenched giants with massive communities and years of content behind them.

For March of Giants to endure, it will need not only strong design but consistent updates, transparent communication, and a clear competitive identity.

What Ubisoft has acquired is potential. Whether that potential translates into a lasting presence will depend on execution, patience, and the studio’s willingness to iterate based on player feedback rather than chase trends.
