  • Marathon Deluxe Edition players found a bug that repeatedly grants the 200 Silk bonus.
  • Restarting the game after spending Silk restores the Deluxe Edition reward.
  • Players can unlock the entire Reward Pass within minutes using the exploit.
  • Bungie may patch the bug soon and could penalize players who abuse it.

Bungie’s new extraction shooter Marathon has barely been out for a day, yet players have already uncovered a loophole that allows them to race through the game’s Reward Pass system. The exploit revolves around Silk, Marathon’s in game currency, and it appears to affect players who purchased the Deluxe Edition of the game.

Shortly after launch, several players began reporting that they could repeatedly claim the Deluxe Edition Silk reward simply by restarting the game. The method spreads quickly across community forums and social media, with some players completing the entire Reward Pass in a matter of minutes rather than days or weeks.

The discovery comes at an awkward moment for Bungie. The studio has recently taken a strong stance against cheating in Marathon, warning players that anyone found exploiting the game could face a permanent ban.

How the Silk Restart Bug Works

Marathon’s progression system is tied closely to Silk. Players earn the currency through gameplay and then spend it to unlock tiers in the Reward Pass, which contains cosmetics, upgrades, and other in game bonuses.

Normally the system includes a limit of 140 Silk. However, Deluxe Edition owners start with an additional 200 Silk as part of their purchase. This bonus is meant to give early supporters a small head start.

The issue lies in how the game handles Silk overflow.

Because the initial Deluxe Edition reward exceeds the standard cap, the extra Silk is stored in an overflow pool. Players noticed that when they spend most of their Silk and then restart the game, the overflow is recalculated. Instead of simply restoring the leftover currency, the system grants the full Deluxe Edition reward again.

In practice, this means players can repeat a simple loop.

  • Spend Silk to unlock Reward Pass tiers.
  • Leave a small amount in the overflow pool.
  • Restart the game.
  • Receive the Deluxe Edition Silk reward again.

By repeating this process several times, players can unlock every stage of the Reward Pass without actually playing matches to earn the currency.

A Problem Bungie Will Likely Fix Quickly

Given how widely the exploit has circulated, it is almost certain Bungie will address the issue soon. Bugs tied to progression systems are usually treated as high priority because they undermine the entire reward structure of the game.

Marathon’s Reward Pass is designed to encourage steady progression through gameplay. If players can bypass that system entirely, it not only disrupts balance but also affects the long term engagement model Bungie intends to build.

The studio has dealt with similar problems before. In Destiny 2, Bungie has occasionally rolled back player progress after exploits allowed unintended gains. In some cases, the developers simply patched the bug and let players keep their progress. In others, accounts were adjusted to remove unfair advantages.

At the moment, Bungie has not issued an official statement specifically about the Silk exploit.

The Risk for Players Using the Exploit

While the bug may look harmless, using it could still carry consequences. Bungie recently published a blog post outlining its anti cheating policy for Marathon. The message was direct and uncompromising.

According to the studio, anyone caught cheating in the game could be permanently banned with no second chances.

The key question now is whether Bungie considers this exploit to be intentional cheating or simply a launch day bug. Players are not modifying files or using external tools. Instead they are repeating an in game action that triggers a flaw in the system.

Even so, deliberately abusing the bug to complete the Reward Pass may still fall under the studio’s definition of exploitation.

For now the safest approach for players is to avoid the workaround entirely. Once Bungie deploys a fix, it is possible that any progress gained through the exploit could be reversed.

Launch day surprises are not uncommon in large online games, especially ones with complex progression systems. But the speed at which the Marathon community uncovered this loophole shows just how quickly players can test the limits of a new system.
