  • Google has added a new Video Overviews feature to NotebookLM that turns uploaded documents into narrated video slideshows with images, diagrams, quotes, and data.
  • The feature is fully customizable, allowing users to adjust tone, detail, and focus based on their learning goals, knowledge level, or audience.
  • A redesigned Studio panel now offers quick access to Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps, and Reports, along with multitasking capabilities.
  • Video Overviews are rolling out globally in English for desktop users, with the upgraded Studio panel set to launch in the coming weeks.

Google has announced a significant update to its AI-powered study assistant, NotebookLM, adding a brand-new feature called Video Overviews.

This free tool allows users to convert their documents into narrated video slideshows that include images, diagrams, quotes, and key data. The feature is designed to make complex subjects easier to understand and more engaging, especially for visual learners.

NotebookLM has already been popular among students, educators, and professionals as a way to summarize and explore topics using AI. With this latest update, Google is aiming to make learning not just interactive but also more immersive by transforming static documents into dynamic, multimedia presentations.

How Video Overviews Work

The new Video Overviews feature takes any uploaded document or topic and turns it into a narrated video made up of slides. These slides combine visuals, important quotes, and structured data to create a clear and engaging explanation of the subject matter.

Google describes the feature as a visual alternative to the existing Audio Overviews, which provide spoken summaries of documents. For subjects that are abstract or contain complex data, the visual format offers a better way to break down and present information.

What makes Video Overviews stand out is its level of customization. Users can set the tone and detail level of the video based on their knowledge, learning objectives, and intended audience. There’s even an option to include a custom prompt, allowing you to guide the AI in shaping the style and focus of the final video.

Redesigned Studio Panel with New Tools

In addition to Video Overviews, Google is also rolling out a redesigned NotebookLM Studio interface. The updated Studio features four primary creation tools right at the top of the panel: Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps, and Reports.

All generated content appears in a convenient list below these options, making it easier to manage multiple formats of study material. Another key improvement is the ability to multitask within the Studio panel. For example, users can listen to an Audio Overview while simultaneously exploring a Mind Map or reviewing a Study Guide.

According to Google’s announcement, the goal of the redesigned Studio is to help users take their source material and generate an entire collection of learning formats quickly and seamlessly.

Global Rollout and Availability

Google confirmed that Video Overviews are now rolling out globally in English. However, there’s one limitation for now: the feature is currently available only on desktop. Mobile support has not yet been announced, but given the tool’s popularity, it’s likely to arrive in future updates.

The improved Studio panel with its new interface and multitasking features will also be available to users worldwide in the coming weeks.

Transforming the Way We Learn

This upgrade marks a big step for Google’s NotebookLM as it moves beyond simple summaries and into interactive, multimedia-based learning. For students tackling complex scientific topics, professionals preparing reports, or anyone trying to digest dense research material, the ability to turn documents into narrated video slideshows could save hours of study time.

By combining AI-powered summarization with visuals and narration, NotebookLM aims to make learning not only efficient but also more engaging. The addition of Video Overviews positions it as a versatile tool for both individual learners and educators looking for innovative ways to present information.

With the global rollout already underway, Google is making it clear that the future of study tools lies in blending AI with multimedia content. NotebookLM’s new features are set to redefine how people interact with information, turning everyday documents into interactive learning experiences that are as informative as they are easy to follow.
