- Garmin introduces WhatsApp app with message viewing and replies
- Users can react, type responses, and manage incoming calls
- Feature available only on select newer Garmin models
- No LTE means continued reliance on a paired smartphone
Garmin has taken another clear step toward becoming a serious smartwatch contender with a new WhatsApp integration developed in partnership with Meta.
The app, now available through the Connect IQ store, introduces a level of communication functionality that Garmin users have long been asking for. Until now, notifications were largely one way. You could read messages, but interacting with them required reaching for your phone. That limitation is finally being addressed.
With this update, select Garmin watches can now display recent messages within a conversation thread, support quick reactions, and even allow replies directly from the watch itself. It is a meaningful shift, one that nudges Garmin closer to the experience offered by more lifestyle oriented smartwatches.
What the new feature actually does
The WhatsApp app offers a compact but functional messaging experience designed for smaller screens. Users can view up to ten recent messages per chat, which is enough context for most quick interactions. The addition of a built in keyboard allows replies directly from the wrist, something that was previously missing from Garmin’s ecosystem.
Typing on a watch is never ideal, but Garmin seems to be betting on convenience over perfection. For short responses, emojis, or quick acknowledgments, it works. There is also the option to react to incoming messages, which further reduces the need to pull out your phone.
Another useful addition is call handling. Incoming WhatsApp calls can now be seen on the watch, with the option to decline them. It is not a full calling experience, but it adds a layer of control that users will appreciate.
There is some speculation about whether voice input might complement the keyboard on certain models, especially those that already support voice features. However, neither Garmin nor Meta has confirmed this capability yet.
A shift toward lifestyle smartwatches
This move is part of a broader evolution in Garmin’s strategy. Traditionally known for its GPS focused fitness watches, the company has been steadily expanding into lifestyle territory. Brighter AMOLED displays, improved design, and features like call support and messaging are all signs of this transition.
The WhatsApp integration reinforces that direction. It signals that Garmin is no longer just for runners, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is increasingly positioning itself as an everyday smartwatch brand that can compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung.
That said, Garmin still retains its fitness first DNA. The new messaging capabilities do not replace its core strengths but instead complement them, making the watches more versatile without sacrificing performance tracking.
The limitation that still holds it back
Despite the progress, there is one notable limitation. Most Garmin watches still lack LTE connectivity. This means the WhatsApp functionality depends on a connected smartphone. While replying from your wrist is convenient, the watch cannot operate independently in the same way some competing devices can.
For users who are always carrying their phone, this may not be a major issue. However, for those who want a truly standalone smartwatch experience, it remains a gap in Garmin’s offering.
The rollout is also limited to a relatively small number of newer models. Older devices and certain popular lines are not included, which may frustrate some existing users.
