Amazon is once again reshaping its streaming strategy in the United States. The company has confirmed that its ad free Prime Video option is getting a price increase and a new identity. Starting next month, the ad free tier will cost $4.99 per month instead of the previous $2.99. Alongside the price jump, Amazon is also introducing a new name for the plan: Prime Video Ultra.

The change signals a broader shift in how streaming platforms are structuring their services. What was once included as a basic premium feature is increasingly becoming part of a higher tier package. With Amazon, the new Ultra plan sits above the Prime Video experience that comes bundled with a standard Amazon Prime membership.

What Prime Video Ultra Offers

Amazon is trying to justify the higher price by adding several extra benefits to the newly branded Prime Video Ultra plan. Removing ads remains the headline feature, but the company is expanding the package with additional streaming perks.

Subscribers to Prime Video Ultra will now be able to download up to 100 titles for offline viewing. Previously, the limit was capped at 25 downloads. The number of simultaneous streams is also increasing from three to five, making it easier for multiple people in a household to watch different content at the same time.

Another notable addition is Dolby Atmos audio support, which improves the immersive sound experience for compatible devices. For viewers who watch content on large screens or home theater systems, this upgrade could make a noticeable difference.

Even users who stick with the standard Prime Video experience will see a small upgrade. Download limits will increase from 25 to 50 titles, and concurrent streams will expand from three to four. However, the biggest change lies elsewhere.

4K Streaming Moves Behind the Paywall

One of the most significant changes in Amazon’s new structure is the shift in video quality. Under the new model, 4K and UHD streaming will be exclusive to the Prime Video Ultra tier.

This means that users who rely on the version of Prime Video included with their Amazon Prime subscription will be limited to 1080p streaming going forward. For viewers with 4K televisions, this could be a major downgrade unless they upgrade to the new paid tier.

Amazon is adding Dolby Vision support to the standard plan, which improves color and contrast on compatible displays. However, the resolution itself will still be capped at full HD.
