  • Tim Cook insists battery life is “great”, claiming up to 27 hours of video playback.
  • The phone is eSIM-only, freeing space for a larger battery, and most components are packed at the top to maximize capacity.
  • Apple also launched a MagSafe battery pack for the Air, hinting some users may still need extra power.

Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, the newly launched iPhone Air, has already sparked plenty of debate – particularly around whether its ultra-slim design has come at the expense of battery life.

Measuring just 5.64mm thick, the iPhone Air was unveiled earlier this week alongside the rest of Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup. With the device setting a new record for slimness, many fans have been wondering if that means sacrificing staying power.

Apple CEO Tim Cook insists there’s no need to worry. Speaking to CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Cook described the phone’s battery as “great,” adding, “You’re going to love the battery life.”

According to Cook, Apple reengineered the handset “from the inside out” to maximize capacity, even taking advantage of the space freed up by removing the physical SIM card slot in favor of eSIM-only support.

Official figures from Apple suggest the iPhone Air can deliver up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge. That’s slightly less than the 30 hours on the iPhone 17, the 33 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro, and well behind the 39 hours offered by the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Interestingly, Apple has also announced a MagSafe-compatible battery pack designed specifically for the Air – a move that could signal the company’s own acknowledgement that some users may find themselves reaching for extra juice.

Beyond the numbers, Apple has packed most of the iPhone Air’s components into the top portion of the chassis, leaving the rest of the space dedicated to the battery. Whether that engineering trick is enough to offset concerns will only become clear once the phone ships to customers next Friday.

For now, Apple is banking on Cook’s confidence that users will be satisfied. As he put it: “It’s like you’re holding the future in your hand.”
