Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features a New “C” Button: What Could It Do?

Nintendo’s latest mobile app, Nintendo Today, has given gamers an unexpected sneak peek at the Nintendo Switch 2.

A promotional image from the app reveals a new detail about the upcoming console: an additional “C” button on the right Joy-Con controller.

This previously unseen button has sparked widespread speculation about its potential function, marking a significant change in Nintendo’s controller design.

The “C” Button

A closer look at the right Joy-Con in the Nintendo Today app screenshot shows a small “C” button positioned just below the Home button.

This is the first time such a button has been seen on a Nintendo Switch controller, and its inclusion suggests new functionalities for the Switch 2.

Interestingly, this button was present in the first official teaser video for the Nintendo Switch 2, but it lacked the visible “C” label at the time.

Now, with this clearer image, its existence is all but confirmed. However, Nintendo has yet to explain what this new input will do.

A Nod to Nintendo’s Past?

Nintendo has a history of using “C” buttons on its controllers. The Nintendo 64 featured four C buttons on the right side of the controller, mainly used for camera control and extra commands in various games.

The GameCube evolved this concept into the “C-Stick,” which served similar functions.

Later, the New Nintendo 3DS included extra C controls as part of its redesigned layout. Now, with the Switch 2, Nintendo seems to be reviving the “C” button concept, but its purpose remains unclear.

What Could the “C” Button Do?

There are multiple theories about the function of this new “C” button” on the Nintendo Switch 2:

1. Cursor Control for Mouse-Like Navigation: Some speculate that the “C” stands for “Cursor,” suggesting that the button could enable mouse-style navigation on the Switch 2. With the console’s rumored larger screen and an improved kickstand, this feature could make navigating menus easier, browsing online, or playing certain games that benefit from precise cursor movements.
2. A New Communication or Chat Feature: Another popular theory is that “C” stands for “Chat.” This could mean that Nintendo is integrating a built-in voice or text chat system, addressing a common complaint about previous Switch consoles. If true, it could make multiplayer gaming more seamless, allowing players to communicate more efficiently without relying on third-party apps.
3. A Shortcut to Community Features: Some believe that the “C” could stand for “Community.” This might indicate a new social hub on the Switch 2, possibly reviving features similar to the Miiverse, which allowed players to interact, share experiences, and post messages. This wouldn’t be entirely unexpected given Nintendo’s recent efforts to strengthen its online services.
4. A Quick-Access Button for a New Functionality: It’s also possible that the “C” button has an entirely new function not seen before in Nintendo consoles. It could serve as a shortcut for in-game actions, a new type of connectivity option, or even be related to augmented reality (AR) features that Nintendo has been experimenting with.

When Will Nintendo Reveal More?

Nintendo has confirmed that a dedicated Nintendo Direct event on April 2, 2025, will focus entirely on the Switch 2.

This presentation is expected to provide official details on the console’s specifications, features, and gameplay enhancements—including the mystery of the “C” button.

Additionally, rumors suggest that preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 could start immediately after the presentation, further increasing excitement for the new console.
