Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that artificial intelligence-powered glasses will soon become a must-have technology.

Speaking on Meta’s second-quarter earnings call, he warned that people without AI glasses may face a “significant cognitive disadvantage” in the future.

“The Ideal Form Factor for AI”

Zuckerberg argued that smart glasses will become the main way people interact with AI. “Glasses can let an AI see what you see, hear what you hear, and talk to you throughout the day,” he explained.

He added that integrating displays, from subtle overlays to full holographic views, will unlock even more potential for everyday use.

Meta’s Smart Glasses See Strong Growth

Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have already become a surprise hit. The glasses allow users to capture photos and videos, stream music, and ask Meta AI questions about their surroundings.

Sales have more than tripled year-over-year, according to eyewear partner EssilorLuxottica. Zuckerberg also hinted at more advanced devices in development, including the upcoming Orion AR glasses.

Betting Big Despite Heavy Losses

Reality Labs, Meta’s AR and VR division, continues to be a costly bet. The unit reported a $4.53 billion loss in the last quarter, bringing total losses to nearly $70 billion since 2020.

Even so, Zuckerberg described the spending as a long-term investment in the future of consumer AI and computing.

The Race for the Next AI Device

While Zuckerberg is all-in on glasses, other tech players are exploring different ideas.

OpenAI recently acquired Jony Ive’s hardware startup for $6.5 billion to build AI-first devices, and startups are experimenting with AI pins and pendants. Still, Zuckerberg believes glasses are the clear frontrunner.

“They’re going to be the ideal way to blend the digital and physical worlds,” he said. “That’s the heart of the Metaverse vision, and AI is going to make it happen even faster.”
