A sweeping law enforcement operation across Spain has delivered a significant blow to the notorious Black Axe criminal network, a group long associated with cyber fraud and a wide spectrum of organized crime.
Coordinated by Europol, the raids resulted in the arrest of 34 suspected members believed to be operating as part of Black Axe’s European arm. The operation underscores both the reach of the group and the growing determination of European authorities to disrupt transnational cybercrime networks.
Spanish authorities confirmed that the arrests took place simultaneously in Seville, Madrid, Malaga, and Barcelona.
The suspects are accused of participating in cyber enabled fraud schemes while also supporting broader criminal activities tied to the organization. Investigators seized close to 140,000 dollars from various bank accounts, along with an additional 77,000 dollars in cash, pointing to the steady flow of illicit funds generated by the group’s operations.
A Coordinated International Crackdown
According to officials, the raids were led by the Spanish National Police, with analytical and intelligence support provided by the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. German officers were also deployed on the ground, highlighting the cross border nature of the investigation.
Authorities describe Black Axe as a highly structured and hierarchical organization with its roots in Nigeria and members spread across dozens of countries. While many of its crimes are carried out on a relatively small scale, investigators say the sheer volume of activity allows profits to accumulate rapidly, reaching into the billions of euros over time.
The group is formally linked to the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, an organization that Europol has repeatedly identified as a hub for both violent and cyber enabled criminal activity. Law enforcement agencies have long warned that Black Axe’s blend of traditional organized crime and modern digital fraud makes it particularly difficult to dismantle.
Cyber Fraud and the Business of Exploitation
At the core of the Spanish investigation was an alleged money mule recruitment operation. Prosecutors believe the arrested suspects focused on recruiting individuals from economically vulnerable communities, persuading them to move illicit funds through personal bank accounts in exchange for small commissions.
These money mules play a critical role in masking the origin of stolen funds and complicating efforts to trace financial flows.
Europol has stated that Black Axe is involved in a broad portfolio of crimes that extends well beyond cyber fraud. These include drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution, kidnapping, armed robbery, and even fraudulent spiritual practices.
While not all members are involved in every activity, the organization’s structure allows different cells to specialize while remaining connected to a central command.
The group reportedly divides its territory into around 60 zones within Nigeria and another 35 zones abroad. Each zone is said to host roughly 200 members, bringing the total number of registered members to approximately 30,000 worldwide.
In addition to these members, countless affiliates, facilitators, and money mules support operations without being formally inducted.
Structure, Rituals, and Global Reach
Investigators describe Black Axe as more than a loose criminal network. It operates with strict internal rules, enforced codes of conduct, and initiation rituals that are often violent and deeply ritualistic. Spiritual beliefs and practices are reportedly used to reinforce loyalty and obedience, making it harder for members to defect or cooperate with authorities.
Despite the scale of the operation in Spain, officials have not disclosed the identities of those arrested, nor have they confirmed which specific cyber campaigns were linked to this cell. However, experts believe the disruption will have a ripple effect, at least temporarily slowing recruitment and financial operations across Europe.
For Europol and its partners, the raids represent another step in a long term strategy to weaken organized cybercrime by targeting its human infrastructure rather than just its digital tools. By focusing on money mules, facilitators, and regional coordinators, authorities hope to make it harder for groups like Black Axe to regenerate and adapt.
While the arrests mark a significant success, law enforcement agencies caution that Black Axe’s global footprint means the threat is far from eliminated.
