  • OpenAI launched ChatGPT Pulse, a feature that delivers personalized morning briefs.
  • Pulse currently serves Pro subscribers at $200 per month, with plans to expand to more users.
  • The tool combines news updates, personal schedules, and even travel or dining tips.
  • It aims to make mornings easier and more informed without overwhelming users.

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Pulse, a new feature designed to help people start their mornings with personalized updates. Instead of scrolling through endless social media posts or jumping between several apps, Pulse gathers the most relevant information and presents it in one simple morning brief.

This new tool is a major step in OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT a more proactive assistant rather than a tool that waits for users to ask questions.

Pulse Brings Morning Updates to Your ChatGPT App

ChatGPT Pulse generates five to ten reports overnight, so they are ready when users wake up. These reports can include news summaries, personal reminders, or even trip plans. The goal is to make people open ChatGPT in the morning as naturally as they would check their favorite news app.

OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, shared that Pulse aims to bring the level of personal support that was once only available to the wealthy to everyone. She said that Pulse is the first step toward that vision, starting with Pro subscribers but planned for wider release in the future.

Currently, Pulse is being rolled out to users of the $200-a-month Pro plan. It appears as a new tab in the ChatGPT app. OpenAI plans to make it available to Plus subscribers soon, once the feature becomes more efficient and less demanding on computing power.

What Pulse Can Do for You

Pulse goes far beyond basic news summaries. It creates tailored reports based on your needs and interests. For example, in a demonstration for TechCrunch, OpenAI product lead Adam Fry showed his personal Pulse reports.

They included:

  • A roundup of the latest updates on the British soccer club Arsenal
  • Halloween costume ideas for his wife and children
  • A toddler-friendly travel guide for his family’s upcoming trip to Sedona, Arizona

Users can also interact with these reports. They can tap on a report to see it in full detail and even ask ChatGPT follow-up questions about the contents.

A standout aspect of Pulse is its design choice to avoid the addictive scrolling pattern often seen in social media. After generating a few reports, it stops and displays a friendly message that says, “Great, that’s it for today.” According to Fry, this is intentional to help people feel informed without being overwhelmed.

Smarter With Personalization and Connectors

Pulse works seamlessly with ChatGPT’s Connectors. By linking apps like Google Calendar or Gmail, users can receive summaries of their most important emails or a clear schedule for the day ahead.

When ChatGPT’s memory feature is enabled, Pulse becomes even more personal. It can recall previous conversations to improve future briefs. For example, OpenAI’s personalization lead Christina Wadsworth Kaplan shared that Pulse knew about her passion for running and suggested scenic running routes for her upcoming trip to London.

Kaplan, who is a pescatarian, also noted that Pulse offered restaurant suggestions that fit her dietary preferences based on her calendar’s dinner plans. She described Pulse as “net-new functionality”, something that feels genuinely fresh in consumer products.

Why Pulse Matters for News and Daily Planning

Pulse is set to become a friendly rival to traditional news apps, paid newsletters, and other brief services. However, Fry emphasized that Pulse is not meant to replace existing news sources. It still cites its sources with links, similar to the way ChatGPT Search works.

The reports are shown as cards with AI-generated images and short text summaries. Users can click on each card to read more and explore the topic further.

This approach makes Pulse more engaging than a static news list, while also respecting the reader’s time by keeping things concise.

The Challenge of Computing Power

One of the biggest hurdles for Pulse is the amount of computing power it requires. Some tasks, such as summarizing emails, are fairly efficient. Others, like synthesizing large volumes of information from the web, are more resource-intensive.

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman recently noted that some of the company’s new products, like Pulse, will initially be limited to the highest-tier subscription because of these resource needs. OpenAI is already working with partners like Oracle and SoftBank to expand its data centers so that these advanced features can reach more users.

Future Possibilities for Pulse

OpenAI has plans to make Pulse even more powerful in the future. The company envisions a version of Pulse that can take actions on a user’s behalf. Imagine an assistant that could make restaurant reservations, draft important emails, or even plan a complete itinerary with minimal input.

However, these agent-level features will need much stronger AI models and user trust before they become a reality. For now, Pulse is focused on being a reliable, efficient source of morning updates.
